CHAPTER NINE

Brody tapped his foot and twisted another wire, careful to make a perfect loop of the beads he’d threaded in a glittering row. He fumbled with a bead, earning a fond smirk from Bea. He shrugged, returning her smile. It was like every painful afternoon he’d ever spent trying to learn how to tie flies with his grandpa, never being as good at it as Luke.

His amateurish skills didn’t matter, though. He was happy to help with whatever work Bea needed completed. She was a few feet away, up to her ears in freshly harvested evergreen sprigs, some flat green stems, puffy white flowers and some flatter, wider-petaled ones that he’d thought were poppies, but she’d called anemones.

“What are these loops for again?” he asked, laying another next to his growing row.

“They’ll add some glitter to the bridesmaids’ bouquets.” Squinting at the monstrous arrangement in front of her, she moved one of the ball-shaped flowers. “Mine, too. Similar to the faux diamonds and pearls of my original design but coordinating with my dress.”

“That’s me, bringing the bling.” He chuckled, unable to keep a straight face.

She snorted. “Oh, always.”

“You know me. Gold’s always been my favorite color.”

“So says the wall of medals in your town house.”

His stomach dropped. “It’s your house, too.”

Her hands stilled. The stem she was holding snapped audibly. “Uh, right.” She glanced at Rashida. “We were waiting until after the wedding to live together. I’m, uh, in the process of moving my things over from my old place.”

Mark waved a hand. “It’s okay. We can edit that part out. Keep going.”

Brody gritted his teeth. How many shots of this did they need? They’d been arranging flowers for what felt like a decade. Bea’s quick fingers and skilled eye, him fumbling and helping where he could. Were they never going to get a minute to themselves? He’d have thought that in the week leading up to a wedding, the bride and groom would get at least a few moments alone. But alone didn’t seem to exist when they were busy with twelve-hour days of filming.

Tomorrow wouldn’t be any better. They’d be tromping all over Sutter Creek, getting hometown footage. And after that, Bea would be finishing the decorating on Wednesday and Thursday... At least she’d solidified her vision for something rustic, elegant and a little wild.

Was she happy with it?

It was impossible to talk about anything of substance while the cameras were rolling. And Christ, they needed to have a serious conversation. Putting down his pliers, he stole another glance at her. A disgruntled wrinkle marred her forehead.

“What’s the matter, Sparks?”

“Something’s missing.” She fiddled with the riot of greenery crowding the table in front of them.

Nudging her with an elbow, Brody winked at her. “I don’t see how, given it’s the size of a small elephant.”

She poked him in the biceps. “The lodge fireplace defines ‘soaring.’ Anything less than substantial will look off balance.”

“I’m teasing. It’s gorgeous.”

“It is.” Her hands landed on her hips. “But is it Christmassy enough?”

“Let me look at it from your angle.
