CHAPTER 3

Marcus frowned after Rachel as she all but ran away from him. What had he said or done that suddenly caused her to bolt as if he’d just announced he had the plague? Granted, he could be an intimidating guy—at least, when he was in work mode. But, today, he thought he’d been relaxed and easygoing around her. Heck, he hadn’t even gotten tense when she’d snagged him in the back with a fish hook. Why did she leave like that, then?

He didn’t like the feeling of scaring off a woman he would’ve liked to have gotten to know better. Those finely cut shoulders and that lean, lithe frame of hers didn’t come from sitting around doing nothing all day long. He hadn’t found out how she worked out to be that fit, nor what activities she enjoyed that used all that glowing health of hers.

Instead, her golden-brown eyes had gone wide for no apparent reason, her pupils had dilated hard in alarm, and she’d fled as if he were the Big Bad Wolf and he’d just taken off his granny disguise.

Not wanting to scare her further, he rose to his feet and followed behind her slowly enough that she had a chance to throw away her paper plate and plastic utensils and practically run for her car before he reached the trash can.

He noted how she glanced around the parking lot furtively, her eyes roving constantly, as if she expected somebody to jump out from behind a vehicle or bush and attack her any second. Frankly, her jumpiness put his instincts on high alert, too. He glided past the picnic table quickly, keeping her in sight all the way to her car.

He watched alertly for danger as she climbed in and backed up fast enough to spurt gravel out from under her tires. Perplexed, he frowned after as she peeled out of the parking lot inordinately fast.

Jackson said tersely from beside him, “Everything okay?”

Spoken like a military man with the same finely honed instincts he had. “As far as I can tell,” he murmured, frowning.

Brett Morgan had mentioned over breakfast this morning that Jackson Sutter was retired army. 75th Ranger Regiment—one of the army’s elite special operations outfits.

Marcus asked, “Do you know Rachel Boyd very well?”

“No. She’s brand-new to the area. I can ask my wife about her. They talked a bit.”

“That’s okay. I’m probably overreacting. She seemed tense about something.”

In point of fact, she appeared to be scared out of her mind. But it felt like a bit of an overstatement to express something like that aloud. Especially in this peaceful little corner of nowhere.

He’d never met a mystery he wasn’t bound and determined to solve, and she was no exception. Climbing into his truck, he headed back thoughtfully toward Runaway Ranch. Rachel’s arms had been lean but muscular, and the major vein running down the middle of her biceps had even been visible. Very few women had that kind of muscle mass or that little body fat.
