CHAPTER 20

Maybe it was his voice. Maybe it was the cold. Maybe it was simply the drug wearing off, but Olivia’s eyelashes fluttered. Her eyes opened. “Bryce,” she said before closing them again.

“No, no. Come back,” he said. “You’re okay. We’ve got you.”

She opened her eyes again and stared at him. This time she seemed to understand. “Mrs. Drindle,” she said.

He gently turned her head so that she could see the woman, whom Brett had successfully retrieved from Davison’s underground bunker. She’d been tied up, but there had been no bomb. She’d been complaining about the rude interruption to her schedule when she and Brett had emerged from the hole in the ground. Seeing an unconscious Olivia in Bryce’s arms had shut her up. Now she was twenty feet away, wrapped in a blanket, talking to an officer. When she saw motion from Olivia, a smile broke across her face. “Welcome back, dear,” she said.

“I’m so sorry,” Olivia said.

Mrs. Drindle waved a hand. “Not your fault. Insufferable man. No respect for other people’s time.”

To say nothing of being a serial killer, thought Bryce.

Olivia turned to him, offered up a half smile. “On behalf of Mrs. Drindle and myself, let me just say that you have remarkable timing.”

His heart sang. She was okay.

“Oh, no. You’re hurt,” she said, looking at the bandage on his shoulder. She struggled to sit up, but her efforts were clumsy.

“Calm down. It’ll be fine,” he said. “I’m worried about you. Medics are thirty seconds out.”

“Davison?” she asked.

He had turned her so that the first thing she saw when she awakened was not Davison. She’d had enough trauma. But she needed to know that he was no longer a threat. “Dead. I shot him. He’s never going to harm you or anyone else ever again.”

A shiver rippled through her entire body. “Oh, Bryce. Someone needs to tell Tatiana. He was a horrible man, but he was still her father.”

“I’ll talk to her,” he promised. A whole army of people were running toward them. The first officers on the scene had already strung up police tape that would keep most everybody back. But the paramedics were waved through.

“You’re going to need to step back, sir,” the first paramedic to reach them said.

He was happy to do that. He wanted her fully checked out. “She was most likely drugged,” he said, carefully releasing her. He leaned down and kissed her gently, not caring if anyone saw. “Let them check you out. Please.”

She reached up and stroked his cheek with her cold hand. “Thank you,” she said. “For everything.”

“My duty,” he said. “And my distinct pleasure.”

Olivia’s blood pressure was dangerously low, and after a quick exam on the cold ground, she was lifted onto a stretcher, carried to a waiting ambulance and unceremoniously loaded. Mrs. Drindle was going into another ambulance. In the distance, she saw a paramedic giving Bryce and Brett Shea an update. Right before they closed the back door, Bryce was there.

“You’re going to be fine,” he assured her.
