Felicity glanced around her small apartment to make sure once more that everything was in place. Agreeing to Scottâs request that he bring over decorations for the tree he had insisted on buying her, sheâd had to rush home to straighten up before he arrived. Now, dressed in a soft pair of jeans and a warm sweater, she stood in the middle of her small apartment and found herself thinking about the times Scott had hung out in her even smaller flat in London. With a kitchen too small to do any real cooking, sheâd lived on takeout, until one night when sheâd decided to cook a meal for Scott. It had been a disaster from the moment sheâd put the small chicken in the tiny oven to the moment the fire alarm in the building had gone off. As usual, Scott had pitched in and helped with the cleanup without commenting on the fact that she was a disaster in the kitchen. Instead heâd picked up the phone and ordered takeout, acting as if that had been the plan all along. Of course, since heâd experienced her cooking before, it might have been.
She hadnât thought much of her apartment in London recently. Or at least she had tried not to think of it. Sheâd left it so suddenly. Her thoughts at the time had only been for her parents. It wasnât until after the funeral that sheâd known she couldnât return to London. Her parents had been too fragile at the time. Sheâd made the hardest decision of her life in a matter of hours, knowing that if she took too long to think about it, she might not be able to do what she knew was best for all of them. Sheâd had to stay with her parents. And sheâd had to let Scott go to live out his dream of working in London. After seeing where her brotherâs failure to achieve his dream had taken him, she couldnât be responsible for Scottâs dream ending because of her.
Her apartment doorbell buzzed, and checking the camera, she opened the door for Scott, who carried two large boxes.
âThat seems a bit much for such a little tree, donât you think?â She took the top box from him, then placed it on the small kitchen table. When a whiff of ginger and garlic met her nose, she opened the box, revealing multiple small cartons. âYou remembered?â
âThat we always vetoed your request of Chinese and substituted pizza and beer when we decorated the tree?â He laid the other box next to the tree, then took off his coat. âIt wasnât really fair using our two-guy votes against you all the time.â
It had been enough to make her scream at times when her brother and Scott sided against her, but sheâd eat all the pizza in the world if things could go back to the way they were then.
âBesides, itâs time for some new traditions. And Iâm starving,â he said as he moved the pizza takeout menus on the table out of the way.
