CHAPTER NINE

DESPITE THE BUSY NIGHT, Morgan woke at her usual early time. After dressing, she checked her phone, relieved to find she had service again. Sandy had texted that all the patients from the clinic last night were doing well and not to worry about coming in, since Ely had already rechecked all of them earlier.

Reassured she wasn’t needed, Morgan decided to take a walk up to Wingate to see Jeremy. The exercise would do her aching legs good. Plus, it would give her time to think about everything that had happened with Ely and how her feelings toward him were changing. Well, not exactly changing. She’d always cared for him. But now those feelings had deepened into more. Her step had a bit of extra bounce now.

Trust me, he’d said that day they’d picnicked on the summit with the kids.

The thrilling, terrifying thing she realized now was that she did.

She trusted Ely Malik, against all odds.

The rest of her trek to Wingate passed in a blur. She couldn’t say exactly when she’d gone from doubt to certainty where he was concerned. Maybe it was the way Ely showed such kindness for those around him. Of how he always put others first. Or his devotion and loyalty to his family and friends. Ben had had a lot of good qualities, too, at first, she could admit now. But his main focus had always been his career and his status as a surgeon. When they’d married, she’d known that, but she had thought eventually that would change. She’d been wrong. So wrong.

She didn’t worry about that with Ely, though. He would remain as he was.

Even to his own detriment.

Morgan stepped up on the granite steps under the portico at Wingate and knocked.

“Come in!” Jeremy opened the door for her with a delighted smile. “Perfect timing. I just finished a fresh batch of croissants for breakfast. We can sit and you can tell me all about your sea rescue last night.”

Morgan wasn’t even surprised he knew all about it now. She chuckled and followed him to the kitchen, inhaling the delectable scents of pastry dough and butter, then sat on a stool at the island to relay the previous evening’s events, interrupted here and there by Jeremy’s gasps.

Once she’d finished, he said, “The Malik men are something else, aren’t they?”

Seeing as how she’d only met the one, Morgan shrugged. “Well, Ely was pretty amazing last night, that’s for sure.”

“Were you scared? I’d have been terrified.”

Strangely enough, Morgan hadn’t been. Not really. There’d been moments when she’d worried about the patients and more than once when she’d been terrified for Ely, but she’d never been truly scared for herself. She shook her head. “This sounds weird, but I honestly loved every minute of it. It reminded me of my time in Africa. And working in the busy ER in Boston. I guess I’ve grown accustomed to the adrenaline rushes. Last night was oddly exhilarating, actually.” She smiled. “And to think I came to the island for the peace and quiet.
