CHAPTER NINE

THEY FOUND A quiet place to stop to eat the picnic and disembarked. After munching on chicken and salad sandwiches and juicy peaches Lexi lay down on the picnic rug and stared up at the brilliant blue sky, relieved Jono hadn’t been able to read her thoughts. This was not a date. She sighed. ‘This is the perfect end to my holiday.’

‘Hey. This isn’t the end. We have one more day.’

‘But you know what tomorrow’s going to be like. Holiday washing to do, sorting out stuff for work.’

‘Sharpening your pencils. Finding your gonk.’

Confused, she sat up. ‘Gonk?’

‘You know, those little plastic trolls with sticky-up neon hair. Purple. Pink. Blue. Everyone had one when I was a kid. Mine had blue hair.’

‘I never had a gonk or a troll.’

‘Aww. You poor neglected child.’ He stroked the back of his hand down her cheek.

‘I know. The emotional trauma.’ Then she wondered if she’d said the wrong thing, because even though Jono’s father hadn’t ever hurt him he’d apparently cut him off emotionally from a young age. Her parents had always been so supportive—lack of gonk provision not withstanding—she couldn’t imagine not having them on her side.

But he was just laughing and shaking his head. ‘Now I know what to get you for Christmas. Do they even sell gonks these days?’

‘I have no idea.’ She lay back down and tried to ignore the rise of heat at his touch. Mentally ran through her to-do list, reminding herself that Jono Neale was definitely not on it. ‘Packing my lunches for the next five days.’

‘Five days? You don’t get food in the canteen?’

‘I eat on the run, usually when I’m doing paperwork. We don’t get a lot of breaks...’ The place where he’d touched her cheek still simmered from his fingers. Her whole body simmered, craving more. ‘Going through my inbox and sorting out the important stuff. A word of warning—we get a lot of emails from management.’

‘I’m used to it. Some people get clicky with the reply-all button.’

‘This is next level emailing.’

He shook his head. ‘Work talk is forbidden.’

‘But I’m just—’

‘Lexi Fisher.’ His hand covered her mouth. ‘Do not torture me with work. That’s for tomorrow. Let me have one more day’s peace.’

She giggled under his hand and tried to wiggle free. He’d rolled close to her, his face inches above hers. His eyes were shining with laughter, his face a perfect picture of fun.

He laughed and she felt the weight of his body against hers. The pressure of his thighs. His heat. The breeze of his breath when he laughed.

And for a moment, when their eyes met and held, she thought about reaching for him and pulling him down for a kiss. She imagined another day, in another life when she might have lain her head on his lap and read a book, or chatted, or kissed him. There’d be a lot of kissing.

But instead of kissing him she smiled and struggled to sit up. ‘How about we open that wine?’

‘Sure.’ He nodded and jumped back, as if he too had realised the folly of them being so close.
