CHAPTER SIX

DOUGIE WAS SETTLING into the way of things in the NICU in Washington. He’d had time to look at all the protocols and procedures within the unit and had been happy to see that they were regularly updated and reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team.

He’d made a few suggestions to Tara, the charge nurse, about the layout of some of the paper recording sheets kept at the foot of each incubator. She’d listened and taken on board his suggestions, reviewing them alongside the staff and producing some new templates to trial for a month. It had been entirely minor, but he’d noticed a few staff forgot to record some details on the other side of one of the charts. Reviewing the layout and bringing it all onto one page would hopefully stop that happening.

So whilst his work life was going well, his personal life was going even better. But there was no doubt in Dougie’s mind that he still had trust issues. Alice was feisty and occasionally lazy. She was meticulous at work at all times. But on her time off she could spend days where she was up early in the morning and keep going until last thing at night, but she also had days where she could drink diet soda, snack on some chocolate and have a giant book or movie binge.

Their first kiss had resulted in a strained farewell on the stairs that night. Since then, they’d become more comfortable around each other in the house. Dougie was careful not to push and let things go at a pace they were both comfortable with. Last night they’d started watching a movie, but then spent most of the night kissing on the sofa. It was amazing how many hours could be spent just concentrating on the perfect kiss—and at this stage he was sure they had aced it.

But it didn’t stop the worries circulating in his head. He had doubts. And he hated himself for that. It was as if there was a silent voice always whispering Are you sure? in his head. He didn’t think Alice was anything like Kayla. But the idea of trusting someone after everything that had happened with her was hard. Really hard.

Today, they were both working again. Both were careful around each other in the workplace. Everyone knew they were living together, but neither felt ready to share that things might be moving on between them and, to be honest, that suited him.

The conversation around this had been easy for them both. ‘I don’t want anyone at work to know about us,’ Alice had said. ‘I don’t want anyone’s opinion or comments.’

‘Me neither,’ he’d agreed. ‘Let’s just keep what’s happening between us just between us. At least until we know what this is.’

They’d agreed with a kiss. A very long kiss, and that had been fine.

Truth was, Dougie didn’t know how things might develop between them. A one-night stand wasn’t on the agenda. Something for a few weeks might be fun, or even something for the duration of Dougie’s contract, which was six months.
