CHAPTER SEVEN

SAM WAS ON top of this.

If he’d been in any real danger of falling for Lia, he wouldn’t be the least bit happy about sitting in the back of this helicopter with her, knowing that she was about to risk her life again for the sake of saving someone else’s.

This was her job and she knew what she was doing.

Sam knew what he was doing, too. He could operate a winch as well as anybody and he’d done sea rescues like this before, both as the winch operator and the medic who was being lowered on board a vessel to bring a patient up. He knew the dangers. How you had to avoid the winch line getting caught on any of the masts or wires above deck level. That the moment of contact that would come with getting on board had to be meticulously timed with the swell of the sea so the deck didn’t rush up and break your legs.

He could do that for Lia. He could keep her safe so that she could do her job. They’d get her on board and she could do whatever had to be done to treat this lone sailor who’d been caught in the storm and get him safely harnessed and attached to her own body. Then they’d pull them both up and be back at the hospital within the hour. The yacht would have to be sacrificed but that was one of the risks of the sailing game. Boats could be replaced. Lives couldn’t.

So he was happy about doing this job and that meant that he had Lia safely tucked into the category of a colleague, and that was more of a relief than he cared to admit. It didn’t mean he didn’t care about her. Of course it didn’t. He cared just as much as he had when she’d been in danger under that house but he also knew how capable she was. How much she cared about her family and how important it was for her to get home in one piece. She knew what she was doing and she wouldn’t be taking any stupid risks.

Jack had been right about how rough some of these air pockets still were. And he’d been right about the size of the swells they could see beneath them. A good ten metres, he estimated, and the tops were breaking in rolls of foam that made it hard to spot their target.

‘There it is. Three o’clock.’

‘Roger... Copy that.’ The helicopter tipped as Jack began circling. ‘Turning downwind.’

Lia was checking her harness and moving so that she would be ready for permission to move onto the skid of the helicopter when the door was opened.

‘Secure aft.’ Sam focused on the job at hand. ‘Checking winch power.’

The helicopter rocked but Jack seemed happy enough with his control. ‘Speed back. Clear door.’

‘Door back and locked,’ Sam responded. ‘Bringing hook inboard.’

He handed the hook to Lia who attached it to her harness, checking the pit pin was secure and nodding at Sam to show she was happy.
