CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Ava slipped into the break room and waited as Kee continued on out into the corridor. Had she convinced him? Did he now see what she saw? It hurt her to know that she had caused him to see just what was happening here, but she was relieved to know that Kee was not involved.

Unless he was playing her and now she was here in the break room with no backup and just her personal service weapon. She thought of the Russian, Yury Churkin. The man was a cold-blooded killer and even with all her training, she would not want to face him. Ava glanced toward the door, considering escape. Why had she trusted Kee? She knew better than to rely on anyone.

She shouldn’t let her physical reaction to Kee sway her. Shouldn’t let her breath catch or her heart ache. Shouldn’t have to battle the urge to stroke his broad chest or notice the way the concern caused a deep line to form between his brows.

Every time she was near him, Ava took the opportunity to breathe in his rich, enticing scent. Kee smelled of mint and some exotic earthy fragrance like teak. There were traces of him here still in the air all about her. She was losing her battle not to touch him every time she got near him.

She hovered by the window, considering escape as the minutes dragged by endlessly.

When the siren sounded she exhaled a long breath and stared at the ceiling. It was so hard not knowing whom to trust.

He’d done it. The doctor who played all things by the rules had just pulled a false alarm in his clinic. Kee ducked his head into the room and nodded.

“All clear.”

She walked quickly down the hall, passing Radiology, and then turned left to the lobby and the reception area. Betty Mills’s office. It was locked. The woman had locked the door behind her upon leaving. Smart. That move only made Ava more certain about Mills. Ava stared up at the one smoke detector beyond the glass partition that was not sounding because it was not a detector, but did hold a tiny camera pointing straight down at Betty’s keyboard. She had activated it remotely this morning as Betty arrived.

Ava used her locksmith kit to work on the door. It was a simple latch with no deadbolt. Relatively easy to pick, except her heart was hammering and her hand shook. The volunteer fire department was right next to tribal police and would be here any second. She heard the tumblers click at the same time she heard the front door open.

She ducked inside and closed the door, using the wall between the lobby and this office as cover as the fire department crew entered. She heard them moving down the hall and away from her position. She calculated it would take them only a few minutes to check each room for smoke.

Ava was quick as a cat as she leaped up onto Betty’s desk. She yanked the detector down and tossed it in her bag.
