CHAPTER ELEVEN

The meeting at search and rescue headquarters Thursday evening was supposed to be about cleaning out the Beast and brainstorming ways to raise money to purchase a new rescue vehicle. But as team members unloaded supplies from the old Jeep, the main topic of conversation was the two strangers who were staying at Hannah Richards’s parents’ inn. “I think they’re some kind of federal agents,” Hannah said as she sorted through a plastic tub of supplies from the Beast. “They paid with a government-issued credit card.”

“FBI agents,” Danny said. He examined a packet of gauze and tossed it into a bin labeled Expired Supplies.

“Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearm agents,” Ryan said. “And Explosives. They’re here to investigate the explosion at the Zenith Mine.”

Everyone stopped working to stare at him. “How do you know that?” Austen Morrissey asked. He was crouched in the back of the Beast, charged with fishing out anything that had rolled under the seats.

Ryan silently cursed his inability to keep his mouth shut, but he was in too deep to back out now. “They stopped by Deni’s Monday night to talk to her.”

“Why did they want to talk to Deni?” Sheri asked.

Ryan tried for a bored expression. “I guess because she was in the mine when the explosion happened.”

“You guess?” Ted asked. “Don’t you know? You were there, weren’t you?”

“How do you know I was there?”

Eldon laughed. “We drove by Deni’s last night and saw your truck in the driveway.”

“It was still there this morning,” Ted said.

Ryan flushed. He had mixed feelings about spending the night with Deni. The sex had been great, but how would she feel when she found out her dad wasn’t the only one who had done time in prison? Given how upset she was after Agents Olivera and Ferris had badgered her, he hadn’t felt right giving her any more distressing news. Now that the feds were involved, he really should take a step back, but he couldn’t.

Watching Olivera and Ferris accuse her of helping her father plant bombs had brought back memories of when had had endured similar questions. Except in his case, he really had broken the law. He might not always be a good judge of other people, but he was pretty sure Deni was innocent.

“How is Deni doing?” Sheri asked. “I can’t even imagine how horrible it must have been for her.”

“She was pretty shaken up, but she’ll be okay,” Ryan said.

“Did those agents say if the explosion at the mine was caused by a bomb?” Tony asked.

“They asked a lot of questions, but they didn’t offer any information,” Ryan said.

“Mom says they don’t say much of anything,” Hannah reported.

“Where’s Jake?” Danny asked. “He could probably tell us.”

“Jake is working,” Hannah said. “And he wouldn’t tell you anything. He doesn’t talk about his work.”

“But does he tell you?” Danny nudged her. “Then you could tell us.”

“I have better things to do with Jake than talk about cop stuff,” she said, which prompted shouts of laughter from the others.

“I think it had to have been a bomb,” Danny said.
