CHAPTER THIRTEEN

He’d meant only to hold her, to place a chaste kiss in her hair, as a gesture of comfort. But his mouth had other ideas and his body had other wants. They moved independent of his mind and his good sense. A kiss dropped on her head led to a kiss along the delicate curve of her ear, another along the gentle sweep of her jaw and yet another down the long column of her neck.

Even then, he might have stopped there if it hadn’t been for the soft mewl of delight that purled up from the depths of her white throat, or if her body had not pressed into his, her hips hard against him as if their bodies knew better than their minds what was required in the moment. His name was a whisper on her lips, the last word they uttered before his mouth claimed them.

She was honey and sugar to his tongue, all sweetness and necessity, a luxury he could suddenly not live without. She gasped beneath his mouth and his body moved to deepen the kiss, his hand digging deep into the depths of her hair, anchoring itself at the nape of her neck, to guide her and to steady him.

Her tongue licked at him and the kiss became reckless, ruthless, consuming everything in its path, driving out all thought of consequences beyond the moment. There was only this moment, only this kiss. It was as if he’d waited his entire life for this one taste, for her. And yet, how had he not known until now this was what he’d been waiting for? She was a live, burning flame, white hot in his arms, the heat of her kindling them both. It would be the work of an instant to have her against the stable wall, giving them both the release their heat sought.

Yes, yes, take her here, now.

His body strained in answer. Overhead, thunder boomed, the storm fully arrived. King whinnied nervously in his stall, nature’s intrusion distraction enough for reason and realisation to assert themselves, for his mouth to drag itself from hers, both of them drawing a sharp breath. India staggered backwards, steadying herself against King’s stable door, her eyes wide with shock, desire, disbelief.

‘India,’ he said, ‘I...’ He was what? Sorry? No. Never that. He groped for words and came up with none.

She stepped towards him, putting a finger to his lips, her white-blonde hair falling about her shoulders like a cloud. ‘Say nothing, Carrick. We both wanted it, needed it.’

Need? Perhaps. Wanted it, yes. Had to have it, had to know. Definitely. He was still rock hard with that wanting and with a new longing. He raked her with his gaze, looking for a clue. What would she say if he said he wanted more than a kiss, that he wanted to be inside her, wanted it badly enough he was willing to forgo a bed? That he wanted to give her a pleasure that would wash away
