CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Guy took a moment before he moved, trying to distract himself from the knowledge that Emma’s body was pressed up so close to him he could feel every breath, every miniscule movement. He tried listing all the ways he was going to punish Sophia for this prank, but even that was not enough to tear his mind away from what he was going to have to do.

He braced himself against the walls and then slowly started to slide down, feeling the tickle of her breath on his face as he passed her lips. The urge to kiss her was almost overwhelming and his body paused involuntarily. With a great effort he pushed onwards, having to suppress a groan as his chin caught the material of the neckline of Emma’s dress, the resulting jolt pressing his face momentarily into her cleavage. He felt her take a sharp breath in as he hurriedly pulled away, hitting his head against the wall behind him and letting out a low curse.

As he sank lower he tried thinking of anything but the anatomy of the woman in front of him. Crop cycles, military manoeuvres, the life cycle of a frog. It wasn’t working. He was acutely aware of her body separated from his lips by just a few thin layers of material.

He held his breath as he steadied himself in a crouch before starting to try to move the secret door from the inside. There was a tiny gap that he could almost work his fingers into and he was sure if he could do that the door would slide open. Again and again he scrabbled with the edge of the door, not wanting to admit his fingers were too big, that it was futile.

‘I can’t fit my fingers in the gap.’

‘There’s a gap?’

‘Yes. Tiny, but I think if I could work my fingers in there I could slide open the door.’

‘Let me try. I have smaller fingers than you.’

‘How?’

‘Stand up.’

Slowly he complied, as aware of her body on the way up as he had been on the way down. He paused again when he was level with her lips and had the sense she was breathing more heavily, as if as agitated as he was by their close quarters.

When he was standing fully, Emma pressed her body into his even tighter and together they began to shuffle round in a half-circle so now her back was to the secret door.

Even though it was dark Guy had to close his eyes and bite his lip as Emma began sliding down his body. Her delicate hands gripped on to him for balance, holding on to his clothing and reminding him how close she was. As she settled into a crouch her head was level with the waistband of his trousers and it was all he could do not to groan in frustration.

‘I can feel it,’ she said, her voice brighter. ‘I think I can...’

There was a scraping sound as the door opened and Emma shuffled backwards, falling out of the priest’s hole and into the room beyond.
