EIGHT

Will heard Finley open the door to the barn—who else would it be?—but he stayed where he was, staring at the array of bales and containers in the stable’s feed room. Not that he was surprised Finley wasn’t sensible enough to stay inside the house where it was relatively warm. Finley never could resist having the last word. And once upon a time her last words made him laugh, so he was happy to let her have the final say.

But that was then.

Now? Will was no longer ensorcelled by Finley’s allure. He was not going to fall under her spell again. Not after causing his heart a bruising case of whiplash when she turned cold and cutting without any advance warning. She could swing her impossibly long and luscious legs in his line of sight all she wanted.

Sure, his body reacted to her. He was only human. And Finley was everything he found desirable. He still had the same effect on her, too. Her eyes were normally the color of a glass of whiskey held up to the sunlight, a warm amber brown. But when Finley was aroused, her eyes became deep, dark pools. He could have drowned in her gaze when they were in the kitchen earlier.

He looked down and realized he had filled the horse’s feed buckets with the wrong mixture. Cursing himself for letting Finley affect him, he threw out the contents and started all over.

This couldn’t have happened at a worse time. The meeting in Los Angeles was happening in three hours. Obviously, showing up for it was in the realm of science fiction. He’d asked Tim via the CB radio to call the series producers and make Will’s excuses, but he’d learned from experience the Screenweb executives were prickly, demanding and allergic to compromises. He only hoped when they heard a natural disaster was behind his absence from the crucial kick-off meeting, they would agree to continue with the original production timeline. Ji-Hoon deserved to have his dream come true, and they were in a battle against time.

His mentor was the only reason Will had said yes when the production company knocked on his door, seeking the next big reality dating series. He certainly didn’t need the additional income. Even before the EverAftr app had become a hit, he held the patents on several innovative pieces of software that made streaming services and ISPs more secure, valued at millions apiece to the companies that purchased them. Savvy investing had caused his net worth to grow, to the point that if EverAftr were to disappear tomorrow, it would barely be a blip in his portfolio.

If he’d told his twenty-one-year-old self that he would be featured on Silicon Valley Weekly’s list of top tech execs to watch...maybe his younger self wouldn’t have so readily accepted the label of “not good enough” and slunk out of Washington, DC, giving up his original goal of working for the Justice Department. Instead of law school, he’d gone back to his high school hobby of playing with software code and turned it into a career.
