“You killed it last night, darling,” her mother told Porscha the next morning while she lounged in her bed. “I’ve brought you some hot tea.” She placed the teacup and saucer on the nightstand beside Porscha’s bed.

“Thanks.” Porscha pushed herself into the upright position and placed several pillows behind her so she could drink the tea. “What are they saying?”

“That you and Ryan are the next supercouple. The movie is going to be smashing. How great you look together. It’s all positive,” her mother replied, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Porscha sipped her tea. “Good.”

“Good?” Her mother’s expression showed her disappointment. “That’s all you have to say?”

“What do you expect, Mama? An attagirl?” Porscha asked.

“I don’t expect to be mocked, Porscha. I would think you would be happy to have all the positive press. We changed your narrative. People no longer remember the sullen, depressed and overweight Porscha. All they can see is a happy, fit and successful singer and actress.”

Was that all she was? Porscha wondered. Like she wasn’t a human being with feelings and emotions? Well, she had them. Just because she tried to fit the mold everyone expected of her, it didn’t mean she was a robot.

“Can you please go? I’m tired.”

“I thought perhaps we could do something fun together.”

“Not today.” It was one of her rare free days with nothing on the calendar and she wanted to lie in bed and mope. Mope because Xavier hadn’t answered a single one of her calls or texts.

At first, she’d thought about ignoring his sarcastic congratulations. And she’d done a good job of it. Going with Ryan to the club had kept her mind off Xavier. But once there, she’d had a challenging time faking interest in Ryan when all she wanted to do was clear the air with Xavier. In the end, the date had limped along until eventually Ryan brought her home. When he’d gone in for a kiss, it landed on Porscha’s cheek, and she bade him good-night, much to his consternation.

“If that’s what you want...” Her mother’s voice trailed off as if she was expecting a different answer, but Porscha didn’t change her mind. She wanted to be alone.

Once the door closed, Porscha fell back against her pillows. She understood Xavier was upset. She hadn’t told him in advance about the date and once she did, she had to rush off the phone. But they’d never set the parameters of their relationship. If he wanted more, if he wanted exclusivity, then he would have to tell her. She wasn’t a mind reader.
