Everyone but Alisa had left after they recovered. If she was moving in, it was high time to learn something about her. And as it turns out, the place she worked for handled more than just rare and expensive jewelry.

“Really? What’s it even supposed to be, and why would anyone steal that of all things?” Nevermind that I knew exactly what the statue did. And had it tucked under my bed.

Alisa switched the cross of her legs. “From what I’ve heard, it was one of the student interns who ran off with it. But when the cops searched his place, they never found it.”

I tried to play off my frantic search for the news story on my phone like it was nothing. “Huh. Maybe he dropped it in a trash can or something.” And what used to be Rick’s store still counted as exactly that.

“But what nobody knows is exactly why it was stolen. It’s just some totem with a bunch of superstitious hooey attached to it. At most, an antiquities dealer would pay a few hundred for it.”

Shit… The mugshot on the article was the same kid who’d dumped the thing off on me. “Well, you never know why people want certain things.” Running out of filler bullshit, I figured it was time to go back to honesty. “Like shiny rocks.”

“Yeah, I get it. You’re rich because you never chased things like that. Every customer tries to impress me with that line, even though they’re in a fucking jewelry boutique.”

“No, I’m rich because I got lucky.”

Alisa titled her head and stared at me with just one eye open. “You’re the first I’ve ever heard admit that.” She eased up a little. “Next you’ll tell me that it wasn’t all a matter of hard work.”

“If that was how people got rich, the slaves in The South would have owned the white people in no time. It’s kinda weird how the people who think inequality is fine are always better off than most, ain’t it?”

“Do I really have to keep dealing with these people to live here?”

I shrugged. “Do you? So long as you’re out of here and doing something productive, even if it’s flipping burgers, I don’t give a damn what you spend your time on.” And at least passing out McSlop was more useful than selling rings.

“Would it be too much if I asked you to help pay off some debt?”

“Yeah, kinda.” Sierra had already tried that angle. “Unless it’s the mob threatening to put you in concrete shoes, it’s not my problem. You get the same allowance as everyone else, as long as you stay employed or in school.”

“What about if I get laid off?”

“Then volunteer at a shelter or something. But it’s not like rich assholes are gonna stop buying status symbols anytime soon. I think your job’s safe.” And at least I knew why she was so eager to room with Jaida.

“Without paying rent and living across the street from work, I’d save a mint each month.
