Chapter Fifteen

The girls showed some wisdom when I approached, and calmed their cursing to a minimum. Soon things were in hand, and before long, I was presenting two young women, scrubbed and primped as best Annabelle and I could. Each girl was a sight once their hair had been cleaned and the dirt washed from their faces. I took my sheers and evened their locks out, giving each girl a similar bob cut. Their dark eyes were enchanting, and their slim well-muscled limbs moved with a grace I had rarely seen. They did kick their skirts and pull awkwardly at their dresses constantly, spoiling the image of delicate pretty young women.

"Well, aren't you two lovelies," said Helen when she saw the girls, and she was right. They were quite lovely, that is when they weren't scowling or cursing like a sailor to anyone who looked at them crooked. Only I and Colt seemed to have any measure of influence over the girls.

There was a considerable commotion over near the Eaton's wagons, and when I inquired what it was about, Helen told me they were about to hold a vote to see whether the train would be pushing forward or staying put.

“Fools,” I said, “they are letting their fear cloud their better judgments. We were the last wagons train of the season bound for to coast.”

“We all know it, but most just aren’t comfortable with the idea of heading forward without a real wagon captain and scouts," Helen said with sympathy in her voice.

“Aye, I can understand that,” I said in understanding, “I wish I could share my faith in Colt with them.”

“So, we are certain then?” Helen asked, “He will want to press on?”

“The two of us are going to sit down with him tonight and discuss our future," I said, linking my arm in hers.

"Oh, we are, are we?" Helen asked with a broad smile, "Someplace private, I hope." She said quietly.

“Yes, I was thinking a certain cave, where we will have him all to ourselves," I said, feeling a thrill of excitement and embarrassment at the prospect.

"The two of us?" Helen said, her breath coming quick, “Mmmm, I love the way you think Elenore.”

“Yes, well, you put the idea in my head, you vixen!” I said with a smile, “I have some other ideas for Colt and our little group, I’d like to run them by you on our way over.”

I began to whisper in earnest in the woman’s ear, laying out plans I had been formulating in my mind over the past few days. We were able to get to the cave and have everything set up by the time Annabelle delivered my message to Colt. The girl would have the two new scouts under her and Edith’s wing, showing them what they needed to know about life with our wagon train. And learning all they could about their experiences they had been through over the past few years living in the wilds by themselves.

“Are you nervous?” Helen asked me as we finished and settled down on the blankets to wait.
