CHAPTER 14

SPENCER STARES AT THE GATES of Woodland Terrace, bouncing from one foot to the other wishing he’d been able to get something to eat beforehand. Though he doubts he’d be able to keep anything down, so maybe it’s for the best.

“Let’s call the cops, Billy,” Spencer says, not caring how whiny his voice sounds.

“There’s no reason to,” his brother answers and readjusts the backpack on his shoulders.

Spencer laughs. “No reason to? Eddie threatened us with a gun. He beat the shit out of you and Carlos and took Tori. Tori.”

“He didn’t beat the shit out me,” Billy says. “And what would we tell them anyways? ‘Yes, hello, officer? We stole from a drug dealer and now he’s kidnapped my girlfriend, can you please help?’”

“We don’t have to say all that. We could just tell them how Eddie went crazy and threatened us with a gun. That’s probably enough.”

“No,” Billy says firmly. “We can handle this. Besides, you want Dad finding out about any of this? And if the cops get involved, that’s it for RBWL. You don’t want that, do you?”

Spencer says nothing. The truth is he hasn’t thought about the Royal Brooks Wrestling League in a while. He can’t even remember the last time he looked at his black notebook and tried to piece a new storyline or come up with a new gimmick for one of the wrestlers. Drug deals, kidnappings, and being held at gun point have taken priority the last few days.

“Look, it’s that big retard.”

Spencer squints to where his brother is looking and sees T.J. coming down the hill. He’s dressed in a large black overcoat, which Spencer finds weird considering the sweltering heat.

“Please, Billy, let’s just leave and call the cops, okay?”

“Too late, little brother.”

The sound of the gate’s motors grinding and turning presses against Spencer’s spine and causes him to hold himself tight. T.J. stands on the other side of the gate, staring at the two brothers.

“You ready, Spencer? He asked for the two of us,” Billy says.

I can do this, Spencer thinks and nods.

When the gate is open, T.J. turns around and begins walking back up the hill.

“I guess we’re supposed to follow him,” Spencer says.

Billy does just that. Spencer takes a deep breath and follows him.

“What did you tell Tori’s parents?” Spencer asks in between puffs of breath as they climb up the inclined parking lot.

“Huh?” Billy asks.

“Tori’s parents. Remember? I told you that you needed to call them and make up some lie about to why she wasn’t coming home yesterday.”

Billy stays quiet and keeps walking.

“You did call them, right, Billy?”

“I forgot, okay? It isn’t like I didn’t have enough to deal with. Shit, it took me half the night to convince Carlos and the rest of the guys not to do anything stupid and tag along.”

Spencer closes his eyes and groans.

“We’ll just make something up. She stayed at my place, or we went camping and forgot to tell them. It’s no big deal, we done it before,” he tells Billy.
