Chapter Twelve

Liza

THE DOORBELL rings, letting us know the reporter has arrived, and my heartbeat races as my nerves play havoc on my stomach. Just knowing this man is trying to discover the secret of Willow Creek has me hating him. The people here aren’t hurting anyone, so they should be left alone, but vultures like Mr. Weaver will never allow that to happen. He wants his fifteen minutes of fame, even if it destroys the thousands of people who call this town home.

Eli stands up and places a hand out for me. “Come on, babe. He’s here.”

Grabbing his hand, I stand up from my chair and walk with him to the door. God, what made me tell Eli I would talk to this guy? I hate being questioned. I’m always worried that I’m going to sound like a moron and screw shit up. “Is there anything specific you want me to say to Mr. Weaver?”

“You can tell him I have the biggest dick you’ve ever seen,” he replies with a sexy grin.

“No way, Mister.” Bumping his hip with mine, I laugh. “If I did that, all the women would be chasing after you.”

Coming to a sudden stop in front of the door, he pulls me into his arms and kisses me breathless. “I will never want another woman but you, Angel. A million women could throw themselves at me, and I would still search for you at the end of the day.” With those words, he opens the door to the man who could destroy us all.

Not surprisingly, the man looks like a weasel: skinny, balding head, with a slimy smile on his face. His suit is grey plaid and is at least a few decades old, and his baby blue tie has a large mustard stain spread across it. He’s wearing a pair of silver wire-framed glasses, and a matching mustard stain adorns his chin.

“Let’s get this over with,” Eli says, not giving him a chance to introduce himself.

Leaving the reporter outside, my man leads me back to the living room and takes a seat, pulling me into his lap. “Don’t be nervous, babe.”

“Easy for you to say,” I mumble as Mr. Weaver walks into the room, attempting to be sly as he scopes out our home. As soon as he realizes we’re watching him, he waddles over and takes a seat across from us.

His eyes look from Eli to me, obviously trying to figure out why a grown woman is sitting in a man’s lap, but he doesn’t mention it. Instead, he lays a small recorder on the table and smiles. “Thank you for giving me this interview, Ms. Calder.”

I nod and attempt to smile back. “It’s no trouble at all.”

“Let’s start with an easy question. Why did you decided to move to Willow Creek?”

“My sister moved here to be with her husband, so I decided to tag along,” I reply honestly, not telling him how upset I was when Amelia decided to make the move.

He narrows his eyes before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small notebook.
