15 FIFTEEN

“WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?”

Once Jake left and I was preparing to head to work, Eliot stopped me in the garage.

“What makes you think I’m going to do anything?” I tried to appear innocent, something I rarely pulled off ... and never with Eliot.

He shot me a stern look. “We share the same bed. I hear you muttering about who you’re going to get revenge on in your sleep. I know you.”

“That doesn’t mean I’m up to something.”

“I didn’t say you were up to something. I asked what you were going to do.”

I was mildly embarrassed at the slip-up. “I don’t know yet. I need to think.”

He wagged his finger in my face. “The fact that you heard ‘What are you up to’ in your head means you are up to something. I saw the moment you made up your mind at the breakfast table. Tell me.”

I made a face. “Do you know what sucks the most about living with a guy who thinks he knows everything?”

“That he has to be fast because he lives with a woman who believes she does know everything?”

“I don’t know everything.”

Eliot folded his arms across his chest and waited. He wasn’t going to sit back and watch me leave, a smile on his face, without getting whatever information he believed I was withholding.

I blew out a sigh. “I only know seventy-five percent of things,” I said. “I’m not good at math ... and science ... and sometimes history.”

“Avery.” His tone told me he wasn’t messing around. “If you’re meandering this much it means you’re going to do something annoying. Just tell me so we can get it over with.”

“Fine.” He would find out eventually. “I’m going to Tad.”

Instead of cursing, or telling me I was an idiot, Eliot’s forehead creased with contemplation. “Hmm.”

“That’s it?” I couldn’t help being a little disappointed. “No meltdown?”

“I don’t melt down.”

“That’s like saying I’m not up to something.”

“Not really.” He shook his head and then exhaled heavily. “It’s not a terrible idea,” he said.

“That’s not saying it’s a good idea,” I pointed out.

“I don’t know that I believe it’s a good idea.” He hesitated and then barreled forward. “Spending time with Ludington does not improve your mental health.”

I balked. “I’m not crazy.”

“Not always, but occasionally. Plus, I don’t think you’re supposed to use that word. It’s derogatory.”

“Yes, well, I’m still not crazy.”

“Ludington makes you crazy. He knows how to push your buttons.”

I was insulted. “I know how to push his buttons.”

“You certainly know how to push his buttons,” he agreed. “But he can do the same to you. It’s an unhealthy relationship.”

“I’m better than him.”

“Of course you are.” Eliot leaned forward and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Tell me what this profiler thinks. I expect you’ll hate this dude on sight.”

“Why do you think I’ll hate him?” I was honestly curious. “Do you know something about him?”

“Only what I’ve seen on television. He seems ... capable.”

There was something he wasn’t telling me. “What do you know?”

“I don’t know anything,” he insisted.
