Step #4 of the Flex is Commitment. For the next few days to a week, you will practice making aâ¦
Commitment to taking action to effect change.
Commitment to upholding values, whatever they might be.
Commitment to finding the gifts that lie within struggle.
Commitment to feeling grateful and celebrating lifeâs joys.
Stiff thoughts lead us to get stuck in worry loops and to repeat, over and over again, bad habits that were created in the past.
Flexible thoughts stretch to find new outlooks, possibilities, and understandings to create the brilliant future we want.
Dr. Mlodinow explained to Scientific American, âHappiness, contentment, and gratitude are not just important life goals; they also prompt us to widen our range of thoughts and actions, explore our environment, and open ourselves to new information, all of which are important to success.â But I donât think we need to be happy first. For me, flexibility came first, then greater happiness and success later. Though I do believe continued happiness and success are dependent on my commitment to psychological flexibility.
Itâs like this: We stretch and stretch, and after MONTHS of struggle, we can finally touch our toes. Yay. Mission accomplished. But unless we keep stretching, weâll get stiff again, our toes will be a mile away, and itâs like the limbering never even happened. Mental flexibility unfolds or folds up in the exact same way.
The fourth and final step of the Flex is Commitment, because weâre talking about long-lasting liberation from anxiety and self-doubt. Change requires effort. New neural pathways arenât blazed overnight; new habits donât take root in a day or a week or a month. Real change only occurs through consistent flexing.
Although our past is the architect of our present, the future is still under construction.
