The look on Liam’s face when I told him I had to leave for a while gutted me, but the minute he’d stepped out of the shower, I’d immediately noticed a change in his scent. It was back to being that dull, muted smell that I couldn’t quite grasp. Before hopping on my Harley, I called Ethan, speaking as soon as he picked up, “Are Killian and Xavier still following us?”
“What, you can’t smell them? Surely the intoxicating aroma of your mate hasn’t completely dulled your senses.” His amused response had me grinding my back teeth together.
Inhaling deeply through my nostrils, I did pick up on their presence, and I was thankful that Ethan had taken this extra precaution when I’d called him earlier and told him Liam and I were going out for a bit. At the time, I’d thought he was wasting resources while the center needed to be guarded. I’d protect my own mate, but now I was relieved. There was no way I could leave Liam here alone after his attack while I sought answers. “Yeah, okay, they’re here. Are you and Brice home? I need to speak to you; it’s important,” I spit out.
Immediately, Ethan sobered. “We’re not, but we’ll meet you at the house. We’ll leave now.”
My thoughts were troubled as I rode out to Ethan’s place. Nothing made sense to me right now, and it made me realize how negligent I’d been in not questioning why all of a sudden Liam’s smell had drawn me in. I’d chalked it up to me not having been ready to have my mate, or maybe even that it wasn’t until he was in danger that I knew, but that wasn’t true—my wolf had always known. He’d always craved Liam’s attention and rebuked the disregard and contempt that I displayed toward him. Something wasn’t right, and damned if I could figure it out on my own.
Ethan and Brice pulled up and jumped off his Harley Sport Glide two minutes after I arrived. It was long enough for me to start pacing, mind racing, because now the confusion on Liam’s face when I left was starting to gnaw at me, too. We’d only begun to get to know each other. He didn’t know about mates or that I had no intention of leaving him. Hopefully, this wouldn’t set us back, but… I had to know what I was dealing with before we moved forward.
As soon as we were in the house, we entered the living room. Ethan planted his hands on his hips, legs spread shoulder width apart, and demanded, “Speak.”
Brice opened his mouth, probably to rebuke Ethan for his harshness, but this was the way it worked in times of trouble. For me to leave my newly-found mate, Ethan knew there was a serious problem. Thrusting my hands through my bangs in frustration, I paced in front of them. “I took Liam out for a drive on the back of my bike.” I caught Brice’s eyebrows climbing
