Antidepressants

As I mentioned earlier in this book, antidepressants are being prescribed at higher levels than ever before. A recent study from the University of Oxford demonstrated the effectiveness of 21 antidepressants in adults with depression 12. But as the ensuing arguments by experts in their fields showed, it is never that straightforward, as there are a multitude of other approaches for alleviating depression (see Chapter 5 ). I am personally part of the growing discipline of functional mental health practitioners 13 that focuses on the use of food, limited supplements and functional tests to provide an alternative treatment for mental health disorders, hopefully without a drug prescription. You can read more about it on my website: www.maphealthsolutions.com.

We know what good food does for our mental and physical health, but what exactly do ‘happy pills’ do to our bodies? There is a need to study the long-term risks associated with prolonged antidepressant treatment 14. This lack of long-term studies looking at the effects of taking antidepressants for a prolonged period of time isn’t meant to scare you. Antidepressants can be a lifeline for people with severe anxiety or depression, but if you want to manage your depression without drugs, or if you’re feeling blue and life has thrown out a few curveballs lately, it might be worth asking yourself if therapy or changes to your lifestyle might be worth considering first. However, always talk to your doctor before reducing your drug dose.
