* * *

He paced back and forth in his living room, a rich anger ripping through him. He’d tried his best to kill her tonight. It had been perfect. He’d managed to disable her car and then he had followed her to her front door. Everything had been so perfect, but somehow the bitch had managed to survive his attack.

As he thought of her with the much younger Sam, it completely sickened and disgusted him. And it made him think of his wife, Bettina. After twelve years of marriage that bitch had been going to leave him for a much younger man. In fact, she’d crowed about it, telling him her young lover had more stamina in the sheets than he ever would.

He’d been a good husband to her. He’d spent all the years of his marriage trying to make her happy. He’d worked hard and had been financially generous toward her. He’d made sure she had almost everything she wanted within reason.

He’d known she’d been cheating on him, but he’d figured it was just a fleeting thing and when her affair fell apart, he would forgive her. Until that night, when she’d thrown it all up in his face and had her bags packed and ready to leave.

He hadn’t meant to hit her as hard as he had. He really hadn’t meant to hit her at all. It had just happened. He’d been so damned angry with her and she’d been so cruel. He’d hit her with an uppercut that had snapped her head backward. Then she had fallen and hit her head on the side of the coffee table. He definitely hadn’t meant for her to die, but she had.

Crack. He still remembered the sound her head had made when it hit the wooden surface. For him, it had been the sound of justice. After that everyone in town had thought she’d packed her bags and left him. The truth was, he kept her very close to him now.

Harper had sparked something inside him and he was just waiting and working up his nerve to ask her out. He’d finally decided he was ready for a new relationship with her.

When he heard about her dating the much younger Sam, old memories had shot through his head, bad memories of his wife and her young lover.

He was bitterly disappointed in Harper but more than that she’d stirred an enormous rage inside him that had made him decide she needed to die. She needed to be punished just like Bettina had been punished.

He’d warned her first with the doll and the note. She should have taken that warning and stopped seeing the young man. But she hadn’t. And tonight, his rage toward her had been all-consuming, but he’d failed to punish her the way she really needed to be punished.

He finally stopped pacing and sank down on his sofa. Oh well, tomorrow was another day. One way or another he’d make Harper pay for her sin. And the payment was death.
