Chapter 14
Anna's heart pounded as she spotted the gunmen emerging from the Jeep, visible through the smudged window.
"You called for help?" she asked, quirking an eyebrow.
The man who'd provided his name as "John" glanced over and tensed.
"Shoulda told them to park elsewhere," she muttered. She was glaring down at the man now. "You want to live?" she said. "Tell me where the rendezvous is."
"Bring us the money," he snapped.
"Where do we meet?"
"I'll message you," he replied.
The back door suddenly banged open. She heard loud voices. Boots thumping against the concrete.
He shrugged at her. "Boss is an impatient man. You should've moved faster. Now..." he shook his head. "They'll make you tell them where the money is."
Anna didn't listen, she was already turning on her heel.
She spotted multiple figures in bulletproof vests emerging from behind a stack of shipping crates and old vehicle parts. They were carrying semi-automatic rifles on shoulder straps. She spotted more than one grenade in a bandolier. She was already moving, though. She hit the lights on the wall as she ran, dousing the place in darkness.
The men with the guns cursed. The chatter of bullets erupted in the quiet, dusty warehouse.
Anna sprinted through the darkness. The gunfire echoed around her, ricocheting off the walls of the warehouse. She could hear the men shouting, trying to locate her as she stuck to the shadows, moving behind a concrete support beam and bee-lining back to the bead curtain.
She had more questions now than when she'd first entered this place.
But it wasn't time to naval gaze.
He would text her the location of the rendezvous. She wouldn't show up with the money. How could she? But she'd get her family back one way or another. What had Beth gotten herself into?
Anna weaved through stacks of crates and rusty machinery, evading the armed men as they blindly fired their weapons. She relied on her instincts, her honed skills as a trained assassin guiding her every move.
As Anna neared an exit, she heard heavy footsteps approaching from behind. Without hesitation, she ducked into a small alcove and pressed herself against the wall, holding her breath. An armed man passed by, moving slowly, rifle raised. A flashlight attachment sent a beam across the wall. She allowed him to pass, holding incredibly still.
Once he was gone, Anna pushed herself off the wall and continued forward, careful to remain silent. She spotted him five paces ahead, and then slipped down the left side of the room, away from the bead curtain and this time towards an open window.
Two more gunmen were shouting directives at the others. She heard the gasping voice of "John" as he said, "She was just here. She's armed with a knife."
The weasel was still talking, but she could no longer hear him as she sprinted towards the open window. Ten feet. Five.
Suddenly, a burst of illumination off to her left as another salvo of gunfire tore through the warehouse. The window shattered. Bullets whizzed by her skin. She flung herself through the window, rolling in the grass outside, and sending up a geyser of shattered glass.
