Chapter 20

The Guardians

When Cole emerges into the living room after they’ve all washed up, Noah’s the first to break the silence. “I heard what you told her. Do you really feel that way?”

He waits, not sure how to respond. No Fae woman had ever taken him the way Eve did.

“I do,” he finally says. “It may not have been said in court, but we are not in Lunaria. It is well-known that only the noble lines carry the genes for power such as Eve has shown. For her, a Halfling, to show such tremendous power . . . her lineage might even be stronger than the queen’s herself.”

Cole pauses, looking at his friends. What he’d just said was nearly blasphemy and in the court would get him stripped of rank or position, to spend the rest of his life as nothing but a low-born laborer. Here, things were different.

Finally, Tyler speaks. “So, what should we do?”

“We really should leave,” Jacob says, fidgeting a little. He didn’t know what the others felt during their intense sexual session with Eve, but Jacob had never been much more than a playboy for most of his life. He enjoyed his sessions with the comfort women because there was never anything there. They were Fae women who loved casually, but there’d never been anything deep behind it.

Eve was different. From the first moment he touched her, things went differently. The way she looked up in his eyes, the way she licked his cock as he pumped in and out of her . . . it sparked something inside him, and now he’s nervous.

Cole, though, seems to have taken that instant connection differently. “But she may have a point, although she might be thinking too small. She's focused on the effect a vampire uprising would have on New Haven, and more importantly, the safety of her sister. But it could be much worse, an example that could be repeated in other cities, other countries all over the world.”

“It would create chaos throughout the human realm,” Noah finishes.

“And that would have repercussions through both our realm and Hell,” Jacob admits, sighing. “So, what do we do?”

Cole finishes washing up, thinking while the other three finish getting dressed. “Noah, you and I shall hunt down the vampire menace. Jacob, you and Tyler stay here. While your knives would be useful against a vampire, you are also the best tight-quarters fighters . . . and Eve’s security is paramount.”

“And just how do you plan on finding these vampires?” Jacob asks.

“Leave that to us. Your job is Eve’s safety.”

Five minutes later, he and Noah are ready, Cole’s sword concealed underneath a trench coat while Noah carries his staff as a walking stick.

In the hallway, Noah keeps his silence until the two reach the stairwell. “Cole . . . while I’m honored you chose me to be your companion, but do you know where to start?”

Cole nods, glancing at Noah out of the side of his eyes. “In Old Haven, I’m sure it’s not hard to find a vampire.
