TWENTY-FIVE

Fragments come to me.

Uncontrollable shivering. I’m whimpering. Voices. My limp hands are gently unwrapped from WhipEye and Claw. I have no energy to resist. I’m curled up. Uncle Biggie lifts my head. Healing water trickles down my throat. Heat. I want more of it.

The water is taken away and I panic.

“Please,” I croak.

The flask is on my lips again and the soothing liquid heats my core.

A familiar voice is far away. “Drink slow, Samantha.”

Everything fades away.

At some point my eyes blink open. It’s dark. I cringe, terrified, waiting for the hissing shadows to attack. I’m still trapped in the InBetween with the Lost. Something moves near me, and I cry out, “No!”

“You’re safe, Samantha.” Tris hovers over me, her blue eyes meeting mine, her long hair touching my shoulders. Her necklace of tiny animals reminds me how much animals love her and I feel safe. She gently caresses my cheek, her eyes showing sadness again.

I stare at her for a while, and then struggle to sit up. I have to know. She helps me.

An early yellow moon is shining and we’re back in the green-scented meadow. In beloved KiraKu. The air is warm on my skin and sweet on my tongue. My mind is still in a fog. I would love to curl up in the grass and sleep.

Jake stirs beside me, still wearing his armor. Cerac is helping him sit up. I have no idea how long we were sleeping.

Biggie is lying on the other side of me in the grass on his back. The crocle-lion rests next to him, its crocodilian head on his stomach. I’m relieved no Lost are clinging to the big guy, but even in the moonlight I can see his skin is too pale.

“Biggie!” I remember Jake’s vision and touch Biggie’s arm. Cold.

Tris says, “He’s still with us, Samantha.”

I shake Biggie’s shoulder, but he doesn’t wake up.

Tris kneels beside me, her voice sad. “He’s in a deep sleep. What you call a coma.”

“It’s what I saw.” Jake crawls over and touches Biggie’s face.

My stomach tumbles with another realization. “Where’s everyone else?”

Tris’ lips purse, telling me things are worse. She looks beyond me, and I follow her gaze. Urkaset is still sleeping on his back in the grass. Beside him lies Ridge. Claw marks cover Ridge’s soft cheeks and arms, and his gray pullover is torn. Something vicious attacked him. I swallow thickly.

Cerac walks to him, kneels, and extends his palm over Ridge’s chest. His hand glows slightly, but he quickly pulls it away and looks at us. “I’m not recovered enough to heal him.”

“Did the Lost attack him?” I ask.

“Gorgon’s scum, I bet,” says Jake.

“Correct.” Tris’ eyes narrow. “We were gone for many hours.”

“Hours? How?” I’m confused.

“Time is different in the InBetween.” Tris holds my hand. “Ridge and Altaar are still alive, but fading. They need help or they won’t survive their wounds.”

“Where’s the healing water?” I glance around wildly and spot the canteen lying on its side. Awkwardly I crawl away from Tris, frantic to save Biggie, the grass soft beneath my hands and knees.
