It was well past noon the following day when Katherine finally opened her eyes and the only reason she did was because her phone would not stop ringing. She ignored it the first several times, but whoever was calling was not content to leave a voice message, so when she couldn’t take it any longer she reached out from under the blankets and fumbled around on her nightstand for her cell. She knocked her purse to the floor and spilled its contents everywhere. She pulled the phone under the blankets with her and answered without even looking to see who was calling.

“What?” she mumbled.

“I expected a nicer greeting, Kitty,” Mr. Gardner said icily.

Katherine snapped fully awake and took a deep breath before speaking again. It was like a bucket of ice water had been thrown over her. “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t know it was you.”

“Look at the phone before you answer next time.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Shouldn’t a young woman like you be out and about on such a beautiful day? Why are you still asleep?”

“I was out with friends last night. We stayed out pretty late.” She did not know what time it was, but no matter how late in the day she still did not feel like getting out of bed. She did not feel like being up and about, and worst of all, thinking.

“You must have had quite the night. You can tell me all about it when I see you. I expect you at the house in two hours.”

Before Katherine could protest or complain Mr. Gardner rang off and she flipped the phone shut when she realized he was not there. Knowing her day of leisure was at an end, she levered herself out of bed and wandered down the hallway to take the hottest shower she could stand. It was important she look good for her master and she only had just enough time to groom and primp for him.
