Chapter 10
The rest of their trip was pleasant indeed.
During the day, Logan focused on Will, on sharing the big and small moments that came their way. They hunted and fished, though Will seemed content mostly to hike after John explained the shift Will had witnessed near the plane.
One afternoon Cora dared the boy to jump into the chilly water of the lake. Apparently it was a more palatable dare than climbing into the plane with her, and Will took it with a determined and competitive gleam in his eyes. Swimming to the middle of the lake, he floated there, cajoling Cora to ovary up and get in, until John elbowed her and said, “Go on, smartass.” Sighing, Cora waded in, shouting threats to Will the whole way. Logan and John followed, and their raucous laughter echoed off the surrounding forest.
They spent the evenings around the campfire, telling tales short and tall, then they would drag cargo blankets from the plane and lie in the open to look at the mess of stars overhead. Logan pointed out planets and constellations, and the thick cloud delineating the shape of their galaxy. Will had heard all of it before, but Cora and John jumped in with a few names their culture had given to different star clusters. When John rolled his head sideways and asked, “How do you know all this?” Logan was reminded how much they had missed by way of getting acquainted.
“I was a science teacher,” he said.
John’s dark eyebrows rose in the strange silvery light thrown by the stars. “You going to go back to it?”
The question had more mass than the sum of its individual words. “We’ll see,” Logan said.
John looked at him for a long moment before turning back to the stars.
Late several evenings, the aurora appeared, and John quietly slipped away while Logan and the kids watched the lights. Those were Logan’s favorite evenings, not for John’s absence but his return. He and Logan sneaked away every night to neck in the woods, but after an aurora the scent of John’s skin was more intense. Logan could imagine it sinking talons into him, the sensation as visceral as the reality of John’s hot mouth on his throat. On those nights, they usually ended up on the ground, rolling and wrestling, John on top, then Logan. Logan couldn’t bring himself to get naked, to risk going back to the tent reeking of sex, and John honored that. It was hard though. About the rock-hardest thing Logan had done in a long while.
One night after such a tussle, John slipped back into the trees. Logan returned to camp. He stepped into the small clearing as Will entered it from the opposite direction. Logan squinted at him, thinking Will looked strange, and then realized why. Will’s hair lay in disarray, and his lips looked swollen, darker than usual in the low light of the fire. Logan bit back the chuckle that rose in his chest and gestured Will over to him.
