Isaac

Isaac saw the dark purple circles under her eyes. She was working off too little sleep and her nerves were shot. He’d seen it in soldiers before. It could be a lethal combination that left the soldier making the wrong decision in crunch time. Decisions that could lead to more deaths than necessary. She lowered herself to put both arms around her beloved dog and buried her nose into Daisy’s thick coat. Daisy wagged her tail enthusiastically in response.

″Look inside the cars,” he told her.

She looked at Isaac. “No, I don’t want to disturb people.”

He didn’t argue. It hit him that he was not the only one struggling with the past’s lingering touch. While he still got dragged under the current by the memories of nights he’d do anything to forget, he wondered what monsters lurked in her past. Other than Nathan, who she still hadn’t explained, Isaac was increasingly curious about this woman and her past.

″There’s no one to get upset with you here, Cass.”

Isaac motioned for her to follow him. She lagged behind him, talking in a low voice to Daisy. The connection with the alert Golden Retriever seemed to comfort her. They stepped over to a Ford pickup covered with a thick layer of snow. Scraping off the ice from the passenger window and peering into the cab, Isaac shook his head and waited for Cass to respond. When she didn’t, they moved to the next car. Then another. It took four cars before Cass spoke.

″I don’t get it.”

″There’s no one around.” Isaac pointed toward the off-ramp behind them. “I’d bet most of the people here left.”

″They could come back,” she argued.

″Unlikely, not while the weather gets worse.”

Cass shivered as though she’d just realized that the weather had been getting progressively worse. Snow had buried their tracks, and the surrounding cars had thick layers of ice. Isaac was eager to find a suitable vehicle before the ice had sealed the locks.

″I’ve felt eyes on me all afternoon.” Cass was staring into the empty Honda and missed the way Isaac’s brows furrowed. They’d been mostly alone. Sure, they’d passed people, but there’d been so many deaths. He’d seen the bodies. From the mangled bodies that didn’t survive the crashes to the elderly clutching at their chests to those that had succumbed to their injuries on the side of the road, death had been their constant companion all afternoon.

Some cars still contained the living, or those clinging to life as they bled out or the cold claimed them. Few had crawled out of their ruined cars. Those that couldn’t move had curled around themselves next to the cars. Blood had dripped from wounds while their bodies were positioned oddly. Cries of despair and pain had haunted Isaac’s every step. He’d assumed this was why Cass had been so quiet.

Death wasn’t anything new to Isaac. He wondered if this was why he was less affected by it than she was. Cass finally blinked at him, and he shrugged and walked on.
