Chapter 19

O

n the big screen, an actor would have spun and disarmed the shooter before blinking. In reality, the cool metal pressed a quarter-inch into his neck, and the tight grip on his left shoulder prevented any movement. There were not any options left but to comply. John’s knees almost buckled, and he leaned into the tailgate to stay upright as his hands rose in the air. Any movement or struggle would result in his brains decorating the interior of the truck bed.

“I–I have sixty dollars in my wallet. Take it! It’s yours.”

The deep voice behind him chuckled. “I think that figure is a little short. You fucked up, John. Don’t move.”

The pressure on his neck increased as someone stepped out of the shadows and quickly frisked him. His wallet was removed from the front pocket of his jeans.

“Nothing.” The second voice had an accent John could not place, but the hands were large and firm.

“Search the back. After that, we move inside. You are going to step around to the side of the truck. Don’t try anything. It won’t end well.”

John nodded and allowed himself to be guided. He would have been fine with giving them a hard time and risked his life at one point. Now, however, he had something to live for—Ava.

It was then he saw the second man. He was tall, two inches over six feet, a dark-skinned man with dreadlocks and a gray hooded sweatshirt. He climbed into the back of the truck and tore it apart. There was enough light from the streetlamp on the neighbor’s property to make out the details.

John had to bite his tongue despite the tense situation when he opened the toilet bucket and gagged at the smell. A minute later, he had gone through the cab and found the pistol, but that was it.

“Nothing in the back, and gun up front, but no money.”

“Tsk, tsk. Now’s your only chance. Where’s the money?”
