Chapter Nineteen
Nate sat in his study, pouring over the crystals that Dorvin had given him, just as he had been doing for days. The only break he'd had was the sparring match with Illrune. All the time studying hadn't been so bad, he really enjoyed the subject. But this latest book from Telenor that he was reading was particularly dry and collegiate. It was the closest thing he'd seen to one of his school textbooks. Most of the spell books, and even the ones on magic theory, were surprisingly straightforward and pragmatic. It seemed that Wizards were all about delivering knowledge concisely and without a ton of fluff. Not so with this book⦠it was full of magic jargon and long dry essay-like sections. Still, he had to admit, when he could get through a chapter, he did feel like he had learned something. He just wished it didn't have to be such a struggle to get through it. He took a sip of go-juice and was just about to settle into re-reading the chapter about Telenor's theory on why mana seemed to be so evenly distributed across the globe.
A sudden knock at the door startled him out of his focus. He wasn't expecting any of his friends or deliveries, so he was a bit worried.
As he usually did these days, he held his pistol behind his back while answering it. He was surprised to find a pair of messengers standing on the threshold. He was on high alert, ready to cast a shield spell and step back. That would force them to deal with the barrier before getting into his home, and it would give him time to line up his shot and fire if necessary. However, the dark-haired young man on the left spoke, and it was in a voice he did not expect.
"May we come in, Nate Marche?" The feminine voice was at odds with the masculine-looking figure, then the man winked at him and grinned. Despite the face, he recognized the smile. Then he noticed that the other man, who appeared in his late 40s or early 50s, had a slight scar just below his eye.
He nodded, gestured for them to enter, and then cast a warding spell to prevent anyone from listening. As most were, the house was already warded. Still, for a secret of this magnitude, a little extra precaution was appropriate. He hesitantly asked, "Is that really you?"
The older man closed and locked the door, and then with a wave of her hand, the illusion that had been covering her dissolved like water draining away. He had been right; it was Maerlé, Princess Aerendyl's maid. She gestured to her charge, and the illusion melted away from Wren as well. The princess wore a huge grin at the look on her face.
Wren laughed, then said, "I am sorry for the unexpected visit and the disguise, but the look on your face was priceless!" She looked curiously at the gun Nate was now holding by his side, no longer bothering to hide it.
