Traveling Across America by Bus
JOHN LANSING (Zuko): The rehearsals in NYC had been as rigorous as boot camp, and then our cast was deployed. Ninety cities in nine months. Every night was opening night. We started the tour in Kalamazoo and crisscrossed the country. It was a heady experience. We were young actors earning a paycheck, playing across America in a hit Broadway show. Life was sweet.
DENISE NETTLETON (Marty): Mostly one-night stands in ninety-nine cities, thirty-three states, and two Canadian provincesâplaces like Wichita, Oklahoma City, and Memphis. Although I might be able to tell you about the dressing rooms, I canât tell you anything specific about those cities at all. My salary was $325 a week. Out of that my agent took 10 percent, and we had to pay for our own hotels and food.
Although it seemed like it would be exciting to be on the road, I soon learned that it was less than glamorous: getting up at the crack of dawn to ride on a bus all day, stopping at truck stops for lunch, and then hours on the bus to our next destination.
I felt particularly bad for Ruth Russell, our Miss Lynch, who was probably in her early seventies. It seemed she should have had some kind of seniority. But she had to schlep her own luggage on and off the bus just like the rest of us.
Some people could sleep; I could never sleep on the bus. Some of the more experienced people had it in their contract to get a double seat. I did not. In fact I hated being on that bus!
DEREK KUCSAK (Understudy): This was my first time away from friends, family, and home. I lost so much weight the first week, I guess from nerves, that my belt was tightened to the last notch.
