Funny Money
The snow was melting. Grace noticed it as she drove through the streets. The last snow storm was supposed to freeze everything over for the rest of winter, but it was all thawing out. Regardless of the weather, sheâd taken a speeding call and a fender bender in the two hours since her shift had begun. Theyâd been mundane calls, but at least they had kept her busy for a while, if cold in the wintery outside.
Grace shivered as she sat in her cruiser and turned the heat up to try and get warm. She put one hand in front of the air vent and then traded off with the other when she couldnât stand the cold anymore. Swallowing, Grace hoped the heat would seep into her body sooner rather than later and that she wouldnât get a call for a bit.
Her wishes were dashed when her cell phone rang. Pulling off into an empty parking lot, Grace picked up her phone and stared at the name briefly before she slid the virtual lock and answered. She took a deep breath and then answered, worried sheâd done something wrong and was about to be called into the principalâs office.
âHalling.â
âDeputy,â Brandonâs deep voice answered. âI need you to come back to the station.â
âIs there a problem, sir?â
âNo, no problem concerning you.â
Grace bit her tongue. That sounded like there was a problem, even if it didnât revolve around her. She was clearly being sucked into whatever problem it was. Sighing, she looked out the windshield.
âYeah. Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
âTake your time. Itâs not that big of a deal.â
âWhy am I going back?â
âYou have a special delivery you need to pick up.â
âWhat?â
âJustâ¦get your ass back here, Halling.â
âYes, sir.â
She hung up and shook her head. His cryptic messages had done nothing to ease her. Grace put her cruiser in drive and headed back out onto the streets. She took her time, but she also took the most direct route to the station. She didnât want to make him wait if it truly was something she had done wrong.
Parking in the lot, Grace turned her cruiser off and got out. She hoped she would be back soon enough that it wouldnât let the engine cool and she wouldnât lose her precious heat. Grace stepped through the melting snow drifts until she got to the doors and pushed them open. She stomped her feet on the mat just inside and took a left, heading down to where Brandonâs cubical was.
She rounded the last corner when he grabbed her arm and pulled her to the side. Grace looked up at him with wide eyes. âSir?â
âYou have to take her for a few hours. I promise itâs only a few hours this time and not a whole day. She has some holistic healing fake doctor crap appointment and needs to be there on time. You can drop her off here before that.â
Grace gave him a funny look, her eyebrow raised and her lips sealed.
