I used the in-car system to check the plate and sure enough, it was registered to Andre Grenfell. Why would Grenfell need a motel room? He had a mansion ten minutes north of here. All I could think of was that he had something to hide. The best possible scenario was that he had been cheating on Lizzie, and had maybe had this rendezvous planned for a while. He wasn’t heartbroken that she’d left, and had come out to play.

The other darker option was that a suburban motel room was being used to keep Bailey Carr restrained, drugged, and under control until her captor chose the moment to get rid of her.

I steered the unmarked towards the far end of the lot, backed into a spot, and considered my options. Cavallo and the sarge had me pretty well-trained by now. I pulled out my phone and hit the speed dial for Danny. It rang about 10 times and then went to voicemail. I said, “Can you please call me?”

I decided that a simple door-knock was all that was required. But that still posed a bit of a problem. I didn’t really want to make it official by going to the front desk, showing my ID, and asking for Grenfell’s room number. Gazing around, I thought it looked very much like this motel provided parking spots for the ground floor guests directly outside a patio door to the room. Fine. I counted the doors back to the main entrance and came up with six.

I got out and slammed the car door, heading for the portico that sheltered the entrance to the motel. Fortunately, the foyer was crammed with people lined up to check in, and I walked calmly through the crowd, taking a right down the hallway. I started counting. I wasn’t too worried. If my plan was faulty and a stranger opened up, I’d apologize for going to the wrong room and revert to Plan A. Official enquiry.

Once I got outside the door, which was actually designated as 11 to allow for numbering across the hall, I paused and pretended to be fishing my key card out of my bag. I also checked that my service weapon was comfortably within reach. My plan going forward consisted of only one thing. See if Bailey was there. If she was, then arrest Andre. At gunpoint, if necessary.

I took a deep breath and knocked firmly three times. And there was no response. That got the adrenaline buzzing. What was taking so long? Had I interrupted some late-afternoon delight? Or was a serial killer trying to hide the evidence?

As it turned out, neither. I was about to knock again when Andre opened up. It took him a second to place me, and then he exploded. “What? What are you doing here? Can you even spell ‘harassment’? I’m a private citizen. I have rights.”

From within the room, I heard a female voice. “Andre, who is it? What’s the problem?”

I’d never heard Bailey Carr speaking, but this woman’s tone of voice and her questions certainly didn’t have a note of desperation.
