A few days later, Daphne, Audrey drove up the coast to a spa resort.

After a yoga class in a giant yurt overlooking the ocean, we changed into big Turkish bathrobes and were led up a sycamore-dotted path to a private outdoor hot tub, bubbling with sulfur-smelling mineral water. The camera guy followed us around a wooden privacy partition as we doffed our bathrobes, revealing tiny bikinis, and sank into the steaming water. A spa host came in and delivered a carafe of what looked like mimosa and poured each of us a drink into non-breakable champagne flutes.

It turned out, the drinks were vodka, OJ, and mineral water for bubbles, probably on account of calories or expenses or whatever. We drank them of empty stomachs, and in minutes, I could feel the effects. But it was nice, you know? This might've been a fake dream life, but it was still amazing.

Soon, our first episode would air, and instead of being at home watching it in between applying to grad school and working a job, I got to be here, in a hot tub with ocean breezes, getting tipsy before noon. I got to wear expensive clothes I didn't pay for. And the moment no one was around, the two people I wanted to spend the most time with treated me like I was a drug they couldn't get enough of. I sank into the hot water, relishing every little detail.

For maybe twenty minutes, the three of us talked about Daphne's plans for the surprise anniversary party. Some of it was real, like the guest list. Some of it was fake, like asking me to make a reservation at The Lilly or calling around to see if we could get a giant cake Daphne could pop out of to sing Happy Anniversary at the end of the night— all those plans would be taken care of by the GITZ crew.

"So… how's Chance these days?" I asked, awkward as hell. This was the question I was scripted to ask, Ernie determined to lay hints I was into Chance as thick as a kindergartener's paste project.

Daphne relaxed into the bubbling water, sighing contentedly. "He's just the best, you know?"

That was my cue to be jealous or despondent or whatever. The camera guy moved around, trying to keep his shadow out of the shot. Wooden wind chimes hanging in a nearby tree made meditative tones.

Under the water, Daphne's nails tickled my thigh. I froze, blushing, heart pounding. The water was clear— bubbles churning as the only privacy. I had no idea how much the camera might see.

"How is he the best?" I asked a little archly.

She was pink in the face from the hot water, steam droplets hanging like jewels from her hair.

"Whaddayoumean?" She asked shyly, refusing to look at us. Maybe it was the booze talking, but it hit me how she was supposed to be acting like me. It might be fun to act a bit like her.

"Oh come on, Daph, spill!" Audrey chimed in.
