THIRTY-EIGHT

Leon was at home when his phone rang. When he saw who the caller was, he went to take the call in his office. Trudy had been sitting across from him and he didn’t want her to hear the conversation.

‘Where the fuck have you been?’ he asked, sitting down at his desk. ‘I’ve been trying to contact you all day.’

‘I’ve been keeping a low profile. The police are on to the parties. Erin kept a diary. Her parents found it and handed it in.’

‘For fuck’s sake. Do you know what was said?’

‘Molly said she never saw it; didn’t know anything about it.’

Leon sighed dramatically. ‘Is there any way you can find out?’

‘You mean inside contacts? I doubt anyone will trust me, but I can try.’

‘Do that and come back to me. I need to know how much clearing up I have to do.’

‘Wait – did you know she was pregnant?’

‘Yeah. Jeff told me. Molly has been spouting her mouth off. Does everyone know?’

‘I’m not sure. I can try and find out.’

‘No, leave it for now. The less people know, the better.’ Leon disconnected the call and went back into the living room.

‘What was all that about?’ Trudy wanted to know.

‘Just a bit of business. Nothing to worry about.’

‘It is if you’re up to no good.’

‘Like I said …’

‘What’s going on, Leon? Being secretive will only piss me off, as well you know.’

‘Just leave it, will you?’

‘If it’s anything to do with Ranger Street …’

Leon’s eyes met hers as he turned his head sharply. ‘Everything is fine there.’

‘That’s not what I’ve heard.’

‘Then you should get better sources.’

‘I’m warning you, Leon. If you’re bringing—’

‘Give it a rest, woman,’ he roared. ‘I’m tired of all your insinuations. Nothing is going on!’

He stormed out of the room and into the kitchen. He paced the floor then stood with his hands on the worktop, staring out of the window. That phone call had got his back up. Business was going to be affected by this. There was no way he could concentrate on getting any new orders in, and the runners had been scarce since the trouble with Caleb Campbell, and Seth Forrester going to prison last year.

Things were going from bad to worse. Something had to be done.

Molly hadn’t wanted to go straight back home so she walked around for about half an hour. It was raining so there weren’t many people about. But she didn’t mind if anyone saw her crying. She was in a living hell that she didn’t know how to get out of.

Chad’s manner had shocked her. She thought he cared for her. Was it all words to get her to do things for him?

She loved him, but he didn’t love her … yet. She could change that. Everyone was upset about Erin, maybe things were getting on top of him too. It was all raw. He would come around.

Convincing herself of this made her feel a little better so she finally went home. She walked into the kitchen and jumped as a shout came out.
