Chapter 9

Wesley anxiously thrummed his fingers on his thigh. Quietly, he went onto the back porch so he wouldn’t wake Jax, and placed the call. As the phone rang, he immediately regretted his action. Never in his life had he second guessed himself so much as he had in the past four months. Once, he had been totally confident, one hundred percent self-assured, but his sense of self had been badly shaken.

Along with everything else he had taken for granted in his life.

He should’ve waited to call until the morning. Even if he got lucky and she didn’t think he was trying too hard, he still ran the chance of waking her.

Just as he wondered if he should hang up, she answered. “Hello?” Her voice was soft and slightly husky, like she had been roused from sleep.

“Hey, did I wake you?”

“No, it’s fine. I was just resting my eyes. What’s up?”

Wesley settled into a red painted Adirondack chair. “I have a proposition for you. Now that Jax is going to be home for the summer, I don’t have anyone to watch him during the week. I…was wondering if you’d be interested? I won’t lie and say the pay will be great, but I don’t think he will give you much trouble.”

Goldie was silent for a moment. “You want me to babysit Jax while you’re at work?”

“It would help me out a lot.”

“You have so many friends in this town, why do you want me to watch him?”

“When I’ve needed help in the past, my neighbor usually comes over, but she’s getting older and has her own family to take care of. Plus, he seems to like you and the dogs.”

“I’m only staying in town until my car is fixed,” Goldie cautioned. “If I help, it’ll only be a short time thing.”

“We can use you for however long you stay.”

“Can you give me time to think about it? Or will you be needing someone to watch Jax in the morning?”

Tomorrow was Monday. He should be going to work, but he had already called out since he wasn’t sure of a plan. “I’m staying home with him tomorrow. Sleep on it and give me a call later.”

“Okay,” Goldie said softly. “Thanks for trusting me enough to ask.”

“Goldie…if you do accept, there are some things I will need you to know. You’ve spent enough time with Jax to notice that he doesn’t speak.”

“I did notice,” she admitted.

“Yeah,” Wesley blew out a long breath and glanced at the house to ensure Jax hadn’t woken up and come to the door. “I should have told you when you asked, but we were interrupted and…well, he hasn’t spoken since the accident that killed his parents. Four months ago.”

Goldie made a sound of distress. “God, I’m so sorry. For both of you.”

Wesley had become numb to people telling them how sorry they were for his loss, but there was such genuine sentiment behind Goldie’s words that he felt them from the inside. “I’m not going to lie and say it’s been easy.
