Chaz turned his head for the tenth time on the drive home. He worried that their mate in the middle row of seats was traumatized. She’d told them what she saw, but it wasn’t very much help. She’d never seen the old man in the limo before, but confirmed he was the one to kill Hunter to keep some kind of illegal activities secret.

They figured the woman was part of a minor robbery crew doing cheap, quick hits. More than likely, the blonde had planned to take Hunter somewhere secluded then the guys would show up and assist in the hold-up. Amateurs.

So the questions became what was Hunter involved in and why did he owe so much money to this old guy? Gambling was mentioned.

“Spence,” Chaz said, “do you think Hunter had a gambling problem?”

His partner’s brows pulled together which meant he was running scenarios through his head. Once an army guy, always an army guy. “That could explain why he was out of the office so much. Going to races or betting rooms. But I never smelled any deceit or lies on him.”

Chaz shrugged. “You know, it is possible to lie without putting out a scent. The person had to be very practiced at controlling his emotions. It’s feelings that activate the glands releasing the scent. If he’s not feeling anything, then no smell.”

“You’re saying he’s a professional liar?” Spence grunted.

“Basically.” Chaz nodded. He glanced back at Ash staring out the window. She hadn’t said anything after she relayed bits and pieces of the vision. He wondered if there was more she wasn’t telling them. Her smell was off, but he wasn’t sure why.

When she came out of the vision the first time, she’d mentioned Hunter’s face and hands changing. Had Hunter begun to shift then turned back just before he died? After examining Hunter’s body in the morgue, he and Spence were positive the dead man was fully human. But that still left a problem with their mate.

She’d seen him shift. What did she think of that? He spoke low enough that only a shifter could hear his words. “Should we tell her tonight about what we are?” Shifters were known to exist, but they stayed out sight for the most part. No need to cause problems were none existed.

“No” was Spence’s quick reply. Funny how Chaz was the one originally wanting to wait to tell her anything and now he wanted to spill his guts but Spence insisted they wait. He’d gauge her mental state after they were home and relaxing. He’d make sure they all snuggled tonight to provide emotional support to their fragile mate. His heart hurt knowing she wasn’t her normal happy self.

Spence’s cell phone rang. He pushed the Accept icon on the navigation screen for hands free operation. It was the bank—this time the owner, Perry Springwell. What could he want now? It was late in the afternoon and the meeting with him was tomorrow morning.
