CHAPTER NINETEEN

Arvinder Raj had not taken the raid well. The slaughter up in the entertainment carriage would haunt him for the rest of his life. But there was a worse horror. Visions of his gold being taken from him at the back of the train, draining his wealth and ruining his business empire and family appeared in his mind like wild hallucinations. But while his most loyal lieutenant, Jitendra Vardhan was quietly explaining to him what was unfolding down in the gold car, his mind turned from the gold to the other much more precious cargo he was taking with him back to his Indian homeland.

Had he been a fool to bring it with him on such a dangerous journey? No, he had not. He had never travelled anywhere without the object since first inheriting it over forty years ago. It might be dangerous to travel with it, but it was far more dangerous to let it out of his sight. If he were to lose it to someone else, his hands might never again caress its subtle curves and ancient, enigmatic beauty. And that would never do. Worse, just imagine what another man or woman might do with such unbridled power. It didn’t bear thinking about.

He turned to Lexi. “Will you please leave us all alone for a few moments, Agent Zhang?”

Lexi frowned. “I don’t know. My brief was pretty clear. Do not take your eyes off Arvinder Raj.”

He gave a disarming smile, the same one he had used to thaw a thousand hearts in cruel boardrooms over so many decades. “Please, just for a very short time. You and your colleagues can stand right outside the carriage. You see, Mr Vardhan and I have some private business to discuss. It will only take a few moments.”

Lexi thought his request over. The door at the front end of the carriage was safely locked using his special security system, the same one found on professional safes. There was no way anyone was getting through it. If they wanted to get to Raj, they would need to climb out onto the roof of the train and then somehow hang over the side and get in through the windows, which were also bullet proof. The only other way was through the other door, where she and Alex and Ravi would be waiting for them, fully armed.

“Fine,” but just for a few moments.”

“That is most kind,” he said, turning to the VIPs. “And if you wouldn’t mind joining them, too. What I must say can only be heard by Mr Vardhan. It is a family matter.”

“No trouble,” Congressman Peters said, and helped to shepherd the other guests away. When Lexi, Alex, Ravi and the VIPs had left, Raj turned to Vardhan, his warm, smile fading fast.

“Where are these marauders now, Jitendra?” he asked.

“They have blown part of the roof off the bullion car and are inside the train. ECHO are engaging them in battle on the roof.”

Raj squinted at the snowstorm raging outside the speeding train and looked impressed.
