CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

APRIL HAD BEEN mulling over the lunch conversations for days. She wasn’t crazy—no one gets a pass on problems. She would do something about hers, starting with her mother, who was a thorn in her side. As soon as she heard Sam’s car pull out of the driveway, April quickly got out of bed and peered through the window to ensure he was gone. Hurriedly dressing, she jumped on her speed bike and rode the two miles to her mother’s house. By the time she rang the doorbell, her determination to confront Gabriella had wavered.

“April, what are you doing here this early in the morning? Aren’t you supposed to be at work?”

“Normally, but Mummy, I have some important matters to discuss with you.”

“Well, come in and have coffee. Do you want breakfast?”

“No. I’m fine.” April followed her mother to the kitchen. With renewed interest, she looked over the well-appointed, unassuming style of the home, very much like her own. Even her style was a copy of her mother’s, and which spoke to the woman’s deep influence over her. April accepted the cup of coffee. She needed more than coffee to confront her mother.

“Why do you look so agitated?”

“Mother,” April said, tension sliding down her neck. She placed the coffee cup in the saucer on the kitchen table. “I want to talk about me before I lose everything I value.”

“I don’t understand a single thing you’re saying. Who are you losing?”

“I’m talking about you, me, and Sam.” April’s voice quivered a decibel louder.

“Why are you shouting?”

“Because on this subject, you are deaf. I need you to be open with me right now, Mom, because I think my marriage is falling apart. I have to face a few things about myself to move forward.”

“What do you want me to say about your marriage? As far as I’m concerned, it’s good riddance to bad rubbish.” Gabriella calmly added cream to her coffee.

“Damn it, Mother.” April slapped the table. “You are so insensitive.”

“I have been this way all my life.” Gabriella was curt. “What is it you’d like me to do?”

“I want you to tell me about the hospital and the baby, Mom. Tell me why we never talk about it. Sam wants to have a baby. What reason should I give him why I can’t?”

“Is this some kind of joke? Did you and Sam have another spat? Is this why you’re hysterical?”

“We had a spat, all right. So much of a spat he hit me.”

“He didn’t!”

“Yes, he did, but Mother, it’s not your business. And it’s not why I’m here.” April said sharply. She shouldn’t have blurted that out.

Her mother hurled past her answer as though she hadn’t spoken. “When did all this happen?”

“Mummy!” April riled. “Get over it! Husbands and wives have problems they need to work out themselves. I’m sure you know about that. What I want to talk about is family secrets, mother. That’s part of the reason why Sam and I are fighting. Because of family secrets.”

“Personally, I think his going is a blessing in disguise.
