Chapter 21

Taking the small earring off the magnet, Houston held it between his thumb and index finger. Holding the small object up into the light, he inspected it.

It was a small stud diamond earring. The diamond no more than a half a carat, cut in the triangular shape, sat in the gold setting that moved itself out to a fine point. There was nothing ostentatious about it and it resembled something that a girl might get from her high school graduation. Letting the thought wash over his mind Houston started to compile a profile of who the person might be. A young female reporter who had not been out of school very long. A woman who had not yet established herself and was still wearing jewelry that was less than perfect.

Taking the earring and placing it into his breast pocket Houston did up the button on the pocket keeping the item safe. The judges never needed to see physical evidence but if he had it, he knew it was better. Removing doubt that Micky Landers was a killer was a big part of the job that he was taking on. Bringing him back would be the easy part in his mind but gathering the evidence was a completely different thing. It was the thing that he was neither accustomed to nor had much of a desire to do.

“Hey Wyatt, we might be having a little trouble here,” said Billy through the crackling sound of the microphone causing Houston to go on alert.

“Billy, what's going on?” said Houston, now frozen as his eyes tightened with him trying to listen carefully.

“I got Landers cell phone on the move,” said Billy, mixed in with the clacking of his keyboard. “No guarantee that he is headed back but he is going that direction.”

“Keep me up to date,” said Houston “Anytime he makes any kind of turn to get closer just let me know.”

“Why don't you just get the hell out of there?” asked Billy.

“I think now is the time. I think we can grab this guy now and be done with this,” said Houston, letting his eyes range over the room looking for a location where he might be able to unleash his plan. “Is Falau there?”

“Yes, he just came in the door,” said Billy.

Within seconds a muffling sound came over the radio and Houston could tell that the exchange was between Billy and Falau. He had one chance now to convince Falau that the timing was right and that they could make the grab.

“Wyatt, it’s Falau. What's going on?” asked Falau, with a bit of urgency seeping in his voice.

“I found an earring in the tub. Actually it was down in the drain. I fished it out,” said Houston. “Hasn’t been in there very long and there is no tarnish on it and it doesn't look like it's taking any beating from anything that's gone down there. This went in recently and unless Micky Landers has a lot of lady friends over my guess is that he may have had one of his victims here.
