We try to walk, but my hobbling legs blend poorly with the bear’s dexterous leggings. I aim us for the bed, but he wasn’t built to sit in his dimension, much less here. So we tussle mentally until I figure out how to swing us around and face Bette. To the bear, she’s a bland, nonthreatening character devoid of any prize. It takes all my concentration to fix our eyes on her.

“Leg problems,” Bette says coldly.

“I’m in a zone, but yeah, that, too.”

“Look, I want you to move out, at least for a while,” Bette says. “We’ll do Dateline together, and then that monstrosity next door is your problem. Because legally, it is. You know, you seem drunk.”

“I look different.”

“Since I don’t even know who you are anymore, maybe you’re just being you,” Bette says. “But if you want to know the truth, you look crazy.”
