Chapter 7
It seemed right and natural for Siobhan to fall asleep in Roryâs arms and spend the entire night in his bed. Siobhan had been spectacular, exactly as heâd known she would be, in their first time together. Rory was downright giddy over the fact that he would have Siobhan in his bed for the rest of his life.
But even though their wedding would be in the morning, he knew that Siobhan would incur all kinds of censure from her family if she didnât return home that night. He realized that much as sense returned to him and the hour grew late. In the end, he shook Siobhan slightly and woke her from the slumber sheâd fallen into with kisses.
âI should take you home so that Caelian and your mother donât worry,â he whispered as Siobhan rubbed the sleep from her eyes.
Siobhan sighed. âCaelian would probably call the police to have them search for me.â
Rory thought it was rather more likely that Caelian would know exactly where his sister was, but that brought its own kind of awkwardness with it. One more night apart to save Siobhan from any hint of a black mark on her virginal character was not a major hardship.
They got up, washed off the evidence of their activities, dressed, and went downstairs. Siobhan had brought her buggy, so Rory contented himself to ride alongside her as she drove it home. Once heâd delivered his beloved to the bosom of her family, making a brief apology for the two of them talking until they lost track of timeâa story that Siobhanâs mother and aunt didnât buy a word ofâRory returned home. He crawled back into bed, breathing in the scent of Siobhan on his sheets, then did his best to sleep in preparation of the day that was to come.
He was up, washed, shaved, and dressed with the dawn the next day, then spent far more time than he wanted to tracking down the men he had out looking for Michael. The trouble was, there was no sign of trouble. Not yet, at least. Michael had been quiet all week. He hadnât asked for money again or sought Rory out at home to accost him or bribe him about one thing or another. As far as Rory knew, he hadnât approached Miss Woodmont either. Rory had a man watching the Woodmont house and Mrs. Hornerâs house at all times to make certain of it. Michaelâs silence was worse than being pestered, though. It meant Michael was busy planning mischief.
Rory tried to put all of that aside and focus on the happy day ahead of him. He was more certain than ever that he wanted to marry Siobhan and spend the rest of his life making her happy. Caelianâwhom heâd asked to be his best man, since he was the one responsible for the matchâwas already at the church when Rory arrived.
âIâm surprised youâre actually going through with it,â Caelian greeted him with a slap on the back and a wide smile.
