After the girls left, Heather helped her mom clean up the kitchen as best as she could with her hurt knee. âYou have some terrific friends,â Mom said as they wiped the table clean.
Heather thought how glad she was to have solid Christian girl friends. âAnd weâre all on track for the Olympics. Isnât that the coolest thing?â
Mom nodded. âFirst, weâve got to get your knee back to normal.â
âDonât I know it.â Heather sat down again, rubbing her kneecap. âI still canât believe Kevin and I fell like that.â
Mom said no more, but busied herself with preparing supper. Heather hobbled upstairs to her room. She had intended to begin gathering a few recipes for the Girls Only cookbook, but weariness overtook her. She fell onto her bed, thinking sheâd rest for a few minutes.
Soon, she was dreaming, flying in the air while Kevin sped on the ice. Heather felt so free, so limber . . . so high above the rink. But then Kevin dropped her flat on the ice, awakening her.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Joanne standing over her. âUh . . . whatâs going on?â she asked, sitting up.
âSupperâs ready, sleepyhead,â came the little-girl reply.
âSo soon?â
âMom says youâve been out for almost an hour.â
An hour?
âBetter come to the table,â Joanne said, âso the food wonât get cold.â
She massaged her knee, feeling slightly dizzy as she moved toward the edge of the bed. âIâll be right down.â
âDonât fall on the stairs,â Joanne warned.
âDonât worry.â Then she remembered something. âOh, Joanne . . . have you been, uh, in my room?â
âNope.â
âReading my devotional book, maybe?â
âNope.â
âYouâre sure?â
âI donât tell lies,â Joanne insisted, wide-eyed.
âI didnât say you did,â she replied, even though her sister had already dashed out of the room.
At supper, Dad prayed exceptionally long, blessing the food and asking the Lord âto bring strength and healing to my daughterâs knee.â There was some talk about the club recipe book, and Dad promised to purchase several copies. âIâll take them to the office and sell them there when theyâre finished.â
âReally? Youâd do that for the club?â Heather said, surprised her father was so interested.
Dad chuckled. âWe have two secretaries who could use some trimming down. So sure. Itâll help the cause.â
Mom nodded. âMight just help someone feel healthier, too.â
Kevin glared at Heather just then. His intense glower made her wonder. What was he trying to say? Surely not that he thought she needed to go on a diet!
