Chapter Twenty-Nine

My thoughts were racing as I headed off into the night. Anger, fear, confusion, exasperation and a desperate need for everything to be okay jostled for pride of place in my emotions. I felt like every police officer I came in contact with was screwing with my head. Why were those two pretending that I wasn’t their main suspect? Now that I was away from them, Lisa’s exact words were coming back to me: ‘Please don’t think for one minute that you’ve got away with these crimes, Sophie’. She had directly stated her beliefs to me, throwing my words right back into my face, whereas the other two detectives had been annoyingly nuanced and subtle, refusing to commit to the fact that they were suspicious of me. Although they clearly were. Were they allowed to act like that? In such a fucked up, bewildering way? Probably, I thought, rounding a corner. Bastards.

I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out my phone. I googled the place I knew they’d taken Jack to – Torbay Hospital – and found the phone number. Seconds later I’d reached the switchboard.

‘Hello?’ I said, when someone answered. ‘Please can you put me through to Jack Macreavy’s ward? He’s my brother. He was brought in today, very badly injured. I need to find out how he is.’

Soon, a nurse from the intensive care ward was on the line, explaining in a kind but weary voice that Jack was still unconscious.

‘We’re doing everything we can for him,’ she said. ‘But he’s lost a lot of blood, and on top of his injuries he’s very dehydrated and malnourished. If you give me your phone number I’ll call back if anything changes.’

I thanked her, passed on my number, and rang off.

Shit. Jack was in a terrible condition. I had no idea whether he’d even make it through the night. He was my best – possibly only – chance to get the police to believe me.

My thoughts went back to the CCTV images the detectives had shown me. Why would Jack and Luke go off with a woman they didn’t know? Unless they did know her? But none of us ever really went anywhere, so how on earth could they? And the red-light district – a prostitute? Surely not. But then I felt like I didn’t know anything about anyone anymore. It seems I knew even less about my family than I realised. Maybe they had met that woman before, when they’d jumped out of the window to meet Oliver. Bloody Oliver. I didn’t think anyone else would have introduced her to them. Everything kept coming back to him. And why the fuck was he up on Compington Mount this evening? I hadn’t told the detectives about him being there because I’d wanted to do my own investigating before they called him in. Because once he was theirs I wouldn’t get my own answers, and I needed those very badly.

It was time to visit Oliver in person. I knew
