CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

KIERAN

When Kieran wakes, his head and throat burn like they’ve both been set on fire. At first, he lies there, staring at the ceiling, his mind foggy. Until he feels her.

Glancing down, Poppy’s head is resting on his arm. She’s curled next to him, and it takes him a few seconds to remember how.

For a few minutes, Kieran lies awake, listening to her deep, sleeping breaths. The events of the Halloween party eventually come back in slow, painful stabs through his brain, and he remembers everything.

Slipping his arm out from beneath her, he crawls out of bed, careful not to wake her. Thankfully, she doesn’t stir and continues sleeping, legs tangled in his covers and hair splayed out over his pillow.

No one’s ever slept in his bed, and Kieran doesn’t know what to make of it. They were messed up last night and passed out quickly. Waking up next to her and seeing her asleep on his bed is strange.

As he sneaks into the hallway, his body shivering from another bad hangover, he closes the door softly behind him. He wishes it weren’t insane to lock it from the outside while he grabs a drink. Once again, Kieran curses at himself for bringing Poppy here, knowing the dangers of the abusive prick under the same roof. But the house is quiet, and he guesses no one’s up yet, even though Kieran’s not entirely sure what time it is. His body clock has gone just like his mind.

Even if his father was up, Kieran is confident he wouldn’t go into his bedroom unless he heard he had company. His father stopped barging in when he turned eighteen. At the time, Kieran had been using the gym at school and taking kickboxing classes once a week with Theo. It was mainly to impress Annie, but it ended up being good for other things, like self-defence.

One night, his father tried to start on him. Coming into his room, he began punching him for no reason. This time, Kieran fought back and nearly put him in the hospital. To this day, he regrets that he didn’t. That he stopped. His father hasn’t tried to hit him or come into his space since.

Not that it matters; the damage is done.

Still, Kieran has to be careful. His father can never know when Poppy is here. God knows what he’d try to do to her; this time, Kieran wouldn’t stop. A hospital bed wouldn’t be where he would end up.

Heading downstairs into the kitchen, Kieran grabs a bottle of water from the fridge and knocks it back, draining it in seconds. His throat rejoices that it’s been relieved of the fiery prison smoking almost two packs last night caused. He needs to quit, but he probably won’t.

Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, Kieran grabs another bottle for the sleeping girl on his bed and closes the fridge. He doesn’t notice she is sitting behind him until he turns around. His mother sits at the kitchen table, drinking tea and reading a magazine.
