Someone came up to the prep kitchen to tell Tammy that she had a visitor at the side door. She pulled off her gloves and lab coat and hurried down to see who it was.

Jeff was standing outside the heavy doors. Her chest gave a little flutter. How long was it since she had last seen him? Two weeks? Three? She stepped outside and let the door shut behind her. “Jeff.”

“Tam, you okay to talk?” He gave her a winning look. He did winning very well. “Can we go somewhere?”

Tammy stepped out of the shadow of the doorway, to a spot where the sun provided a modicum of warmth, but no further. She crossed her arms. “What’s left to talk about?”

Jeff sighed and inclined his head. “Don’t be like that.”

She didn’t say anything, just raised her eyebrows. How did he expect her to be after the way he’d dumped her? The need to know why he’d left had abated. She was still annoyed at the abruptness of his leaving, but she realised that her relationship with Jeff had been no more than a habit for some time before that. She just hadn’t seen it. In one evening, Lawrence had made her remember that she’d had dreams and ambitions and that she need not give up on them yet.. Goodness, Lawrence had been just the tonic she needed. And he’d been right in front of her all along. How had she not realised?

Jeff stared at her and drew a breath as though he was going to say something. He failed to get any words out, and drew breath again. Tammy remained still. What was going on? What more bad news could there be? He had told her he didn’t love her. He had left. She had only just got herself back together and functioning. What could he tell her now?

For a mad moment, she thought maybe he’d found out about Lawrence. A flash of guilt flared. But why should she feel guilty? She was single. Jeff had split up with her. She had nothing to feel guilty about. “Jeff, what’s this all about? I have to get back to work.” She uncrossed her arms and turned to go.

“I was wondering ... if you fancied going out for a drink after work,” said Jeff. “I’ve been thinking ... and you were such a big part of my life that I don’t want to lose touch completely. I’d like us to be friends.” He offered her his hand. “So maybe a quick drink after work, just to see how things are. And that there are no hard feelings.”

She was so surprised, her hand actually went out towards his before she stopped herself. “What?”

“I thought ... I don’t know. I thought we could just hang out a bit. No point being at loggerheads just because it didn’t work out romantically.”

She pulled her hand back. How dare he? After everything he had put her through. After he walked out of a six-year relationship, without a backward glance.
