ANDREI slipped away from the funeral, ignoring the tight anger on Wanda’s face and the sharp curiosity on Evelyn’s. Blake had disappeared from the top of the hill, and Andrei began running. That son of a whore would not get away today. They’d be burying him next.

As Andrei topped the rise, he caught sight of a figure up ahead, his head down as he walked swiftly away. He yanked his gun out of the holster and chased him down, closing in on him with every stride.

The man looked over his shoulder and stumbled with a curse as he reached the parking lot. Andrei slowed and trained his gun on Blake. One shot and it would be over with. Dean could rest. Andrei scanned the parking lot for the camper truck and cursed when he didn’t see it. Fuck, he couldn’t take Blake out until he knew where those kids were.

“Hold it right there, Blake.”

Blake ducked behind a car and popped up again with a gun, taking a potshot at Andrei. “Fucking, bastard.” Andrei dove behind another car and rolled, coming up in a crouch. Footsteps ran off toward the left and Andrei followed, keeping low, his heart racing. He had to concentrate on apprehending Blake instead of killing him outright, more difficult and far less satisfying.

As soon as Inez and Tristan were safe, though, Blake was his. Another shot rang out and Andrei ducked. “Give it up, Blake. I’m on to you. There’s nowhere you can hide where I won’t find you.”

“Who the fuck are you?” Blake snarled, the sound of his voice coming from several yards away. Andrei crouched and made his way in that direction. He should remain quiet, but the need for Blake to know who was going to end him overcame his stalking instincts.

“That man you shot.” The gun trembled in his hand, and Andrei clenched his teeth together.

“Yeah, so what?” Two more gunshots took out the window above Andrei’s head showering him with glass. “He shouldn’t have been messing around with my wife.”

Grief warred with rage and Andrei jumped up, rolling over the car hood as more shots followed him. Mentally, Andrei added up the bullets used and prayed that Blake didn’t have another clip on him. “You stupid fucker. He was just changing her tire. He was my partner, you bastard, and you took him from me.”

“Cry me a fucking river. Why don’t you step out and you can join him.”

The sound of pounding feet alerted him and Andrei took off after Blake as he bolted, weaving amongst the cars and cursing at the way they slowed him down. “Where’s Inez and Tristan?” Andrei shouted.

A side mirror near him burst and a sliver of glass drew a line of fire across Andrei’s forehead. “They’re my fucking children. You’re a dead man too. You hear me? You’re not taking my kids from me.”

The cars thinned out as they approached the end of the parking lot, and Andrei’s heart froze as he heard the distant wail of sirens.
