Chapter Eighteen

We drove back into town, and I began to lay out a quick plan on the fly. I had no clue what I was doing, but it seemed to me that the best place to start was to consider who had the best opportunity to kill Toby. I didn’t like where this reasoning was taking me, but I immediately thought about Jesse.

“Toby,” I said, “do you think Jesse has it in him to do something like this? You two didn’t really get along, right?”

He scratched his head. “I don’t know, Library Lady. I guess it’s possible.”

“It’s Michelle!” Georgia yelled. “Why can’t you remember that?”

I waved her off. “It’s fine. All the grade-school kids who come in call me Library Lady too.”

Georgia snickered, and Toby frowned. “Hey!” he said.

“Sorry, sorry. So, about Jesse?”

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “I mean, we didn’t exactly get along well. We were always going head-to-head in everything. He was just jealous. Know what I mean?”

I cast a side glance at Georgia. “Yeah, I think I do.”

Georgia ignored me. “But do you think he could really kill you, Toby? Did he hate you that much?”

Toby shrugged. “I don’t know.”

I turned onto Main Street, and I could see Bean Bags up ahead. Blaire was sitting out front. I had to get rid of these two—quick.

“Okay, here’s the plan. Toby, find Jesse and follow him around. Go where he goes, listen to his conversations, look over his shoulder. Find out everything you can.”

Toby raised a fist into the air. “I got this, Library La . . . um . . . Rochelle.”

“Better, but no.”

He shrugged, winked at Georgia, and then zipped away.

“Ew,” she said.

I looked at her. “Your turn.”

“My turn?”

“Yes. We need to split up.”

“I don’t want to split up. I’ll go with you.”

I didn’t want her with me, for more than one reason, but I also didn’t know how to tell her that. It really would help if we had eyes and ears in multiple places, but I knew Georgia and how stubborn she could be. I had to make this seem like her idea.

“Attached to me already?”

“What? No. You wish.” She crossed her arms and looked out the window.

“It’s cool. I don’t blame you. If I were a ghost, I wouldn’t want to be by myself either.”

“I’m not afraid to be by myself.”

“Oh, okay. My bad. So, do you just want to hang out with me while I have lunch with Blaire?” It was only for a brief moment, but I swear I saw a tinge of annoyance on her face when I mentioned Blaire. Or was it something more than that? Was Georgia jealous that I was hanging out with someone else? Not likely.

She composed herself quickly. “Look, we have a murderer to find here. You can waste time all day eating lunch with Blaire. I’m going to investigate. I’ll check in on Ernie and see if they have any leads at the sheriff’s office.”

“That’s a good idea. Let’s meet up at my place tonight.”

She shrugged. “Maybe so.
