HER NAME WAS LOTUS, SOMETHING THAT had Jared arching an eyebrow, but she was calm and welcoming when they stepped into the back of the shop.

“Take a seat,” she instructed, gesturing to the two chairs across from her. “My name is Lotus, as I already said, and I’m one of the flower people.”

“Is that your real name?” Jared asked as he waited for Harper to sit.

Lotus’ smile was serene. “It is the name of my heart.” She flicked her eyes between them. “Newlyweds?”

“Did you divine that?” Jared was open to believing but he was also keen to uncover a grifter if it became necessary.

“No. You have a sex glow and are wearing shiny new rings.” Lotus indicated the wedding band on Harper’s hand. “She keeps playing with the band but not the engagement ring. That means it’s new and she’s still getting used to it.”

Despite himself, Jared found he enjoyed the woman’s blunt nature. “So, you read us.”

“When you see as many people as I do over the course of the year, you learn to pick up on things,” Lotus replied as she shuffled her tarot deck and held it out to Harper to cut. “You, for example, aren’t sure if you want to embrace a reading. Your heart tells you that your wife wants it, but your head is more clouded.”

“That’s a pretty good read,” Jared acknowledged.

“You love your wife completely. You’ll do whatever she wants because you find joy in her happiness. It means you’re a good match.”

Harper grinned at Jared. “We’ve already figured out we’re a good match.”

“Of course you have,” Lotus encouraged. “True love is a rare find. What you two have built will last a lifetime.”

“You probably say that to all the couples,” Jared noted.

Lotus shook her head. “No. Sometimes love isn’t enough. For you two, it will always be more than enough.” She started doling out the cards. “What do you want to know today?”

“You’ve already answered it,” Harper admitted. “I just want to know that we’ll be happy forever.”

Lotus’ chuckle was light. “You can’t have happiness every moment of every day. That’s unrealistic. You two are built to last, though, and overall you will always be happy.” Her gaze landed on Jared. “Even when you think outside forces will drive you mad.”

“I think she’s talking about Zander,” Harper whispered.

“He’s definitely going to drive me mad,” Jared agreed. “Today we’re here for more practical purposes, though.”

“You have specific questions,” Lotus divined. “Your wife sees the dead and you want to know if the souls haunting her in Salem will hurt her.”

Jared was taken aback. “Excuse me?”

“Oh, I didn’t magically pull that out of thin air. Don’t worry.” Lotus rummaged through the bag at her feet and came back with a brochure for the ghost hunters group. “This was handed out on Essex Street last night. I read it, because Honey was handing them out, and I recognized your wife’s photograph.”

Harper took the brochure and frowned. “I didn’t know they made these up. Where did they get the picture?”

“One guess,” Jared said dryly.
